Lord Ganpati
Good morning PoPvillians.

Okay, okay, I know some of you have other things to be happy about, like a video of a cat playing the piano or that someone has finally invented a bacon cheeseburger roll up (because eating a regular cheeseburger is so damn confusing).

Me? I can’t stop laughing at this parody of The Hurt Locker staring those precocious guys from MTV’s on-going documentary series about the dangers of untreated herpes infections.

But for the rest of you, be happy, the Lord of Petworth has returned to cover for PoP while he is off wearing a beret, eating baguettes and playing with his pencil-thin mustache.

I have to be honest, I had a busy Labor Day weekend, so…I’m kinda winging it today and tomorrow. (This, of course, compared to the massive amount of thought and preparation I’ve put into my previous tenures as your Lord).

If you have suggestions for things you would–or wouldn’t–like me to chat about–or entice others to chat about–I’m all ears.

I must admit that I’ve always had a fantasy that someone will send me advice questions while I’m covering for PoP. This has not happened yet, but if you have troubles with work, love, career–shoot them to me and I will happily share my bad wisdom with you.

“Dear PoPville,

I was just in Miss Pixies when a guy came up to me and tried to pull a change scam. It wasn’t the classic “shortchange” scam (aka “gypsy scam”) but a variation – luckily I knew enough to recognize it. But please let people know this guy seems to be working the area – looking for victims who are distracted shopping.

He came up to me with 4 $5.00 bills and asked me to change them for a twenty. He said he was a taxi driver. I asked why wouldn’t a taxi driver prefer smaller bills to give change to his riders. He said something about having to pay a tax or something at a kiosk and it wouldn’t take a 5 dollar bill – “You know DC. .. ” he said.

It still made no sense, but I looked at the notes and they weren’t counterfeit, so I took the 4 5’s and gave him a twenty. As I was putting the 5s in my wallet, he thrust a $1.00 bill at me and told me I had given him a $1.00 instead of a $20.00.

I knew this wasn’t true, since I had just put 2 20’s in my wallet before leaving home. I stepped back so he couldn’t snatch back the 5s and told him I knew I had given him a 20. He immediately said “yes of course, I know” and pulled my 20 out from under his arm where he had hidden it, and smoothly went on claiming he had asked me for 20 singles for the 4 5s.

I told him I knew he was trying to pull a scam and he turned and fled the store. I alerted the staff and pointed him out to them, they said he had been in the day before asking for change at the counter.

Everyone should be aware of the basic money changing scams and how to recognize them (go to youtube) as well as this particular criminal – Black man early 40s, 5’8″-5’10 medium/heavy build, bit of a gut, walks slightly bowlegged, wore a white cap, polo shirt & Bermuda shorts.”

From a NoMa BID press release:

“A-Deli Italian Food shop has signed a lease in NoMa, bringing delicious Italian hoagies and sandwiches to this rapidly growing neighborhood. A-Deli plans on opening this fall at 1300 Second Street, NE, across from the Courtyard by Marriott Hotel and the New York Avenue Metro Station.

A-Deli, which currently operates a location in Herndon, will offer breakfast and lunch featuring an Italian-American menu, offering diverse options such as lasagna, meatball and cheese sandwiches, Italian hoagies, and cheese steaks. The deli focuses on fresh, hot items and makes everything daily. Most items cost less than $7.00.

The privately owned deli chain was founded more than 10 years ago by Kawal Kapoor, and remains a family business. “We decided to come to NoMa because it’s the next emerging business center,” Kapoor said. “With all the new tenants moving in like the Department of Justice and NPR, we know there will be a need for more lunch options.” A-Deli will open its second location in the 777 SF space in NoMa; they plan to expand further in 2012.
