The well-loved basement bar at Caf Saint-Ex is cranking up the soul for its new series of monthly soul food and DJ music nights, “Pass the Peas.” Named after the popular hit song from James Brown’s band, The JB’s, “Pass the Peas” is a special night of old-school soul food dishes paired with live DJ tunes from Soul Call Paul and DJ Baby Alcatraz, hosted in Saint-Ex’s Gate 54 lounge.

Always a place to enjoy an eclectic lineup of DJs in a vibrant atmosphere, Gate 54 at Caf Saint-Ex is getting soulful with a special southern menu courtesy of Executive Chef Billy Klein. Oktoberfest at the Armed Forces Retirement Home:

Fresh Details about Oktoberfest! on Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., at the Armed Forces Retirement Home (333 Rock Creek Church Rd, NW):

Wings Over Washington Kite Club will wow the kids with their flying skills and help them build and decorate their very own kite to fly. Master kite fliers will fly sport kites to music if the winds cooperate and answer questions about kite flying.

Vendor added — Stix Chix! Featuring lemon peppered shrimp, sweet & spicy steak and tequila lime chicken. Stix Chix joins Captain Cookie, DC Crepes and Rolls in Rolls.

The kids’ art tent will feature making and decorating of German hats, paper model cars, castles, coo coo clocks, beaded necklaces, bracelets and key chains.

Don’t forget — the legendary DC German Band and Bairisch und Steierisch Dancers will perform.

For the duration of the event, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.:

Andrea Pais is a singer-songwriter and pianist living in the Washington, DC area. A classically trained pianist, she started playing the piano at the age of eight. Growing up, she listened to jazz and soul singers such as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James and Stevie Wonder, as introduced to her by her dad. During her teenage years she was strongly influenced by R&B superstars Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston. At the age of fourteen, she wrote her first song Hold Me, inspired by Mariah Careys album Music Box which she couldnt stop listening to. Over the years, Andreas musical influences have become increasingly eclectic, blending soul, blues and rock elements into a unique and commanding sound.

Please join the Friends of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library for a Tour of the Washingtoniana Division, and the Exhibit: Less is More: Mies van der Rohe and the Making of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library, led by Archivist Derek Gray, DC Community Archives, Washingtoniana Division.

This is the first of a series of events sponsored by the Friends of MLK Jr. Memorial Library in celebration of the 40th anniversary of the building.
