yow! twice the ming, originally uploaded by hifiny.

I am not a tall person. That is ok. I have come to accept it. Now yesterday I read that Sun Ming Ming a Chinese basketball player for the Maryland Nighthawks is 7 foot 9! Now let me explain the problem. This shatters a dream of mine. I come from a long line of short people. I’d say I’m 5 foot 6 on a very good day. My uncle at one point claims to be 5 foot 8 of which I am extremely jealous. At any rate my father (also 5 foot 5 and a half as he likes to say) had the opportunity to travel to China. He loved the country. The culture, the food- he was quite complimentary. However, a real light shined in his eyes when he discussed one aspect of the trip. What I remember most is that he said, very seriously, that he felt tall there. So I always had this dream to hang on to…I could to travel to China and be tall at least for a few weeks. But now I see Sun Ming Ming. And we all know the great Yao. I am happy that the nation of China has produced such basketball players but I am very fearful that my dream of being tall for a few weeks has been shattered.

Washington Post is reporting in its print edition of the metro section that Muriel Bowser has raised $190,000 for her Ward 4 city council race. The next highest amount was reported to be $35,756 by candidate Michael Brown. Whew, that is a big difference. I suspect we are going to see lots more lawn signs and banners. I wonder if we’ll even see a tv commercial or two. Ward 4 is making it big time! Get ready to be deluged with many mailings is my guess.

I’ve had a revelation on my trash strewn walk to the metro. There are practically no garbage cans on New Hampshire Avenue! This may contribute to all the trash on the ground. I’m no genius but, well, I’m no genius. I digress, at any rate I just read the City had a $300 million dollar surplus. Maybe we can use some of that dough to get some trash cans for New Hamsphire Ave. ANCs hook us up please.

It was quite a treat to arrive this morning at Farragut North with out smoke, flames, 1000 people on the platform…actually there still were 1000 people on the platform but at least there was no fire.

So it got me thinking, reading the comment from the reader who was delighted with Sweet Mango’s food and ambiance… So I’d like to take a little informal vote. What are people’s favorites out there? Your choices are Colorado Kitchen, Domku, Temperance Hall, Sweet Mango Cafe, Hitching Post, El Torgoraz, or name your own favorite establishment. I’d love to learn about some secret gems that may be out there. I know it is a bit of mish mash between bars, restaurants, etc but think of the one place you absoutely couldn’t live without. I’ll start the voting off with a vote for Domku. If you can please say what you like best about your choice that would be even better.

Speaking of voting I’ve seen lots more lawn signs out there. I think in a few weeks we are going to have a very colorful neighborhood.

I know we’ve been over this before but I was stuck at work a little late tonight and I was dreading the wait taking the metro home. All for naught, that gorgeous Yellow line arrived in three minutes. I can’t quite explain how beautiful this is. Even with the distractions of ipods, magazines, blackberrys whatever the wait for the metro can be excrutiating. No longer will I have to count ceiling tiles when I’m waiting for the green line after working late. I can’t explain the pain of running down the stairs at Gallery Place, being so excited that a train was arriving only to see the dreaded Yellow line to Mt. Vernon Square. It was like a sledgehammer to the chest. No more. I am toasting the genius who ever got this idea off the ground.

Sweet Mango Cafe sign, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

As posted earlier this is the big Brown banner outside of Sweet Mango Cafe. I have, however, recieved an email from Candidate Lisa Bass telling me that she has arranged a banner of her own which should be displayed at Sweet Mango in March. So we’ll just have to see. As for the Fenty sign that you can still see in the window: Isn’t that the political equivalent of leaving up christmas decorations a little too long?

Brown Bowser sign, originally uploaded by Prince of Petworth.

I was walking home this evening when I spotted an unusual sight. As you can see there was a Muriel Bowser sign right next to a Michael Brown sign. Curious. I wonder if the family is divided or if they just haven’t made up their minds yet.

To preempt concern that I am only noticing Muriel Bowser and Michael Brown signs, I am happy to report that I spotted a Tony Towns sign and a Ms. Bass sign. I will be interviewing Ms. Bass soon so stay tuned?

Sorry, I didn’t read the comments of the “Kilroy not me” post. I now have. I’ll try going in the morning next time. I really do want these business to survive. I’ll attach the comments below in case you missed them.

I use Kilroys weekly and I really like it. Basically, the woman who works the afternoon / evening shift can be grumpy. Don’t take it personally – I’ll let them know about this post and hopefully she’ll become a little friendlier? If you go in the morning Ryan (owner’s son) and Ms. Vivian (works up front but has been away with health problems lately) are very, very friendly. They know me by name and are always extremely pleasant. Support Kilroys! Please don’t let this one experience ruin it for you. We need decent businesses like this to thrive in Petworth.

I agree with Geoff! Morning trips to Kilroys are the way to go–It’s actually a nice way to start the day (really). Ryan, Ms. Vivian and Ryan’s Dad have been nothing but great to me and my pounds of clothes. I’ve had no problems with the dry cleaning quality and really appreciate when they go the extra mile–which they often do. Sorry you had the bad experience.
