From Ron Holzer, office of public relations, WMATA:

Starting January 1, 2010, SmartBenefits commuters could lose up to $1,300 per year in transit benefits because of two changes being made by the Federal government:

· The maximum monthly transit benefit allowed by federal law will decrease from $230 to $120; and

· Commuters will no longer be able to use their transit and parking benefits interchangeably as Metro begins to phase in an Internal Revenue Service (IRS) mandate that requires a separation of the parking and transit accounts for commuters.

In the National Capital region, 285,000 employees currently receive transit benefits. And at least 90,000 of these Metro commuters currently receive more than $120 per month.

On top of that, there is an IRS mandate to separate parking and transit benefits. Metro is currently taking steps to comply with an IRS mandate that requires transit and parking benefits be separated into two different accounts. Riders will be prevented from using transit benefits from parking (and vice versa).

More than 220,000 Metro customers will ultimately be impacted by this change, which will be phased through the spring as Metro makes needed programming change to its faregates and fareboxes in order to comply with the IRS regulations.

Obviously I think he means, Jan. 1, 2011. Do you guys receive monthly benefits over $120 a month?

“Dear PoP,

I was riding the green line home tonight from Gallery Place to Shaw tonight around 6:40. I walk in, turn to my immediate left, and sit down. As soon as my bum hits the chair cushion, I look up to see a large woman about a stride in front of me looking disgruntled. She was nowhere near sitting in this seat. I settle in to read something on my phone when she hits me with her newspaper. I was puzzled, she said ‘I should have you get up,’ to which I gave a slight smile, thinking she was joking (did she really hit me with her newspaper..). She then backs up VERY close to me. I’m stuck, nowhere to go. I have the metro car wall on my right, and a girl trying to read a book to my left, and lots of people standing next to and in front of the girl to my left.

She backs her ass right into my space with her legs pushing into mine, nearly falling back when the train starts. I push my knee in to the back of her knee to get her to move forward and away from me (telling her to get the hell away from me in the process b/c she was clearly crazy). She responds by attempting to stomp my foot hard/kick my shin about 7 times. I tell her to stop kicking me and she leans way back again and tells me she’s going to sit on me. I call her crazy and psychotic again (with some swears dropped in b/c, what the hell a 400 lb woman is attempting to sit on 115 lb me).

She finally makes good on her threat, after I spent the better part of 2 (late rush hour) stops digging my keys into her leg to keep her away from me and to discourage her from sitting on me, and actually DOES sit on me AND the girl next to me in the process (her ass was wide enough to require more than one seat). Because I was trapped this whole time (there was no way I could stand up to get away from her), I had to push her over HARD as she was sitting on me so I didn’t get crushed, kicking off my shoe in the process and somehow ending up with her holding what had been in my hand (metro card, credit card, and my keys). I had to frantically grab for my belongings to keep her from doing who knows what with them (at which point some woman said, “ladies, please”; clearly unaware of what this woman had done to me and probably thinking I’m pulling this woman’s belongings away from her when it was my stuff). It happened to be my stop after she sat on me, so I got off, called her ‘*&^(&(@$ psychotic one last time for good measure, and went home to a big glass of wine. I was so annoyed by this woman (who seemed professionally dressed and pulled together).

I told her after she sat that how the hell did she know I didn’t need a seat either. I happen to have an ‘invisible’ disability where I feel like SHIT if I have to stand, despite looking like a young, healthy person on the outside to any casual viewer. She couldn’t comprehend anything other than the YOU TOOK MY SEAT fallacy that preceded this mess. Also, an ass was smiling and enjoying the show the whole time in the aisle and no one attempted to get this woman away from me no matter how far this woman went in SITTING ON PEOPLE AND KICKING PEOPLE.”

Wow, this is insane. What do/can you do in a situation like this? Just get off at the next stop?

“Dear PoP,

I’m hoping you may have some idea on whats up with buses recently announcing loudly when they are making a turn – I haven’t seen/heard anything about it until it blasted my eardrums. We can hear the buses half a block away – a woman’s voice on what sounds to be a loudspeaker or bullhorn saying ‘PEDESTRIANS – BUS IS TURNING!’ & sometimes repeat in Spanish. I was reminded of this when the voice woke my husband & I (along with at least one neighbor dog) around 5:30 this morning.

It certainly isn’t every bus that has this, (last night I didn’t hear any while it was almost non-stop a few nights back) & those that do have it use it differently – some only yell the phrase once while others repeat it half a dozen times. This may be the result of the bus waiting to turn or if it is manually operated an overzealous user? Any insight you may have would be appreciated. I am all for a safer relationship between bus & pedestrian, & if this does it that’s great – I simply don’t think it needs to be at such a high volume!

PLEASE tell me this is test run & we will somehow be able to stop this from becoming permanent!!”

That’s crazy that you can hear it inside. Anyone else hear this? If so where? Is it a metro bus or a circulator? Do you know which bus line?

“Dear PoP,

Have you looked closely at the Metro Map on JJ’s menu ?

Where did it come from? I’d love to have that metro.

The silver line is shown, along with pedestrian connection between Metro Center and Gallery Place, another between Farragut North and West, but how about that Blue Line? Georgetown, West End, Thomas Circle, Union Station, H Street? Someone’s dream or just way out planning?”

I’ve def. seen this map before but it is obviously mere fiction at the moment. Perhaps one day. Anyone know where it came from? What odds to you give of something like this happening and in what timeframe?

JJ’s located on 14th St, NW just south of U Street.

“Dear PoP,

With the recent talk (read: begging) for an additional metro entrance at foggy bottom, the examiner reports that the cost for an additional entrance would be >$20m. This is likely due to the escalators. Which leads to my question, why aren’t there numerous metro entrances at more stations using good old fashioned stairs? There exists escalators and elevators for the handicapped and infirm so, so its not a question of making the Metro accessible. Any ideas?”

It’s a great question – especially considering how often the escalators break down. Anyone know why there aren’t more regular stairs?

From a WMATA press release:

Following this morning’s arrest of Farooque Ahmed for attempting to assist others in planning to conduct terrorist activities against the Metrorail system, we want to assure our riders and employees that at no time was the public in danger during this investigation. The FBI was aware of Mr. Ahmed’s activities from before the alleged attempt began and closely monitored him until his arrest.

We thank our law enforcement partners with whom we work with closely and on an ongoing basis. And we especially want to commend the FBI, Department of Justice, the U.S. Attorney’s Office and the Department of Homeland Security for their support on this arrest. The Department of Justice’s news release is posted here.

This arrest reinforces the need for continued vigilance by Metro and its customers.

From WMATA:

“This weekend (October 22-24) Metro will upgrade its platforms, rail bridges and install communication cables in support of expanded cell phone service throughout the Metrorail system on the Red and Green lines to improve long-term reliability and service. As a result of this crucial work, which is critical to maintain the railroad in a state of good repair, trains will be single-tracking, and so riders should expect their trips to take up to 30 minutes longer than usual.”

I thought this was a pretty cool breakdown of commuting costs from a reader. I can’t believe how expensive metro has become. I would have been curious to see how much a commute by bus cost.

Perhaps just one more potential reason to support the addition of streetcars?

My Daily Commute by Metro:

I leave home at 8:15 AM M-F and get to work between 8:40 and 9:05 AM
Takes 35-50 minutes.
Includes a 1.1 mile bike ride to/from my house to the Fla/NY Ave Metro station.
Includes 11 metro stops.
Includes a 5 minute walk from underground Friendship Heights Metro to my desk.
I leave the office at 5:45PM M-F and get home at 6:30PM.

Costs
$3.25 fare each way with a SmartCard
Round trip = $6.50/Day
x 5 days = $32.5/Week
x 4 weeks = roughly $130.0/Month
x 12 months = $1560.0/Year.

My Daily Commute by Car:

I leave home at 8:15 AM M-F and get to work between 8:45 and 8:55 AM

Takes 30-40 minutes

Involves a 8.3 mile drive from my house to the office.

Round trip = 16.6 miles/Day
x 5 days = 83 miles/Week
x 4 weeks = 332 miles/Month
x12 months = 3,984 miles/ Year
Costs
An average car gets 17 city MPG.
332 miles/ month =19.5 gallons of gas
Average gas price in DC = $2.89/Gallon
x 5 days $14.11/ week
x 4 weeks = $56.44/Month
X 12 months = $677.28/year

To be fair, there are additional costs here besides gas. 3,984 miles per year would
require 1.3 additional oil changes, about 1/10th the life of a set of tires, 1/30th the
life of the vehicle and possibly slight increase in an insurance premium.

My Daily Commute by Bicycle
To work begins at 7:45 AM
Takes about 50-60 minutes
Involves a 7.5 mile bike ride
Requires a shower before work.
Is great for mental and physical health

Costs

2 additional tune-ups per year = $120/Year
