“Updated information on the Barry funeral arrangements, including viewing hours & street closures:

Please note the following updated information regarding the funeral arrangements for Marion Barry:

The body will lie in state for public viewing in the first floor lobby of the John A. Wilson Building (1350 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW) on Thursday from 9AM to midnight, and Friday from 6AM to 9AM.
Pennsylvania Avenue, NW will be entirely closed between 12th Street and 14th Street from 4AM on Thursday to 10:30AM on Friday. Expect traffic delays.
Those paying respects and attending the public viewing are encouraged to use public transportation. The Metro Center and Federal Triangle Metro stations are located nearby. Many Metrobus lines, as well as Circulator lines, pass nearby.
Large crowds are expected at all funeral events, including the public viewing. Please expect long lines.”

Metro Info for Thanksgiving Weekend

“Metro will take a short break from scheduled rebuilding over the four-day Thanksgiving holiday weekend, Thursday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Nov. 30.

On Thanksgiving Day, rail and bus service will operate on holiday schedules (see below for details). On Friday, Nov. 28, rail and bus service will operate on a regular weekday schedule with normal fare and parking rates in effect.

Regular weekend schedules will be in effect on the Saturday and Sunday following Thanksgiving.

Service information for Thanksgiving Day

Metrorail: Trains will run on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day with no scheduled track work. The system will open at 7 a.m. and close at midnight. Off-peak fares will be in effect all day, and parking will be free at Metro-operated facilities.
Metrobus: Bus service will operate on a Sunday schedule on Thanksgiving Day. Customers should check bus timetables for details.
MetroAccess: Paratransit service will operate during the same hours as Metrorail and Metrobus. Subscription trips will be cancelled on Thanksgiving Day unless the MetroAccess customer specifically requests to travel on the holiday.”

“Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of November 21-23 with service adjustments beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday.

Silver, Blue, Yellow and Green line trains will operate regular weekend intervals, except at Franconia-Springfield station on Saturday only (see below). Red Line trains will operate every 16 minutes with additional trains providing service every 8-10 minutes between Grosvenor and NoMa-Gallaudet during daytime hours. Buses replace Orange Line trains between West Falls Church and Vienna beginning 12:01 a.m. Saturday through closing Sunday. (more…)

Pedestrian Hazard: “Cars Making Left Turns onto 17th & Swann from New Hampshire”

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve lived at 16th/V for 8 years — commuting by foot to and from work every day down New Hampshire to Dupont — and I’ve noticed a disturbing increase in the number of cars that, while they have a green light to continue straight down New Hampshire towards Dupont Circle, take the liberty of making a left-hand turn down 17th, which has a red light and a walk signal for pedestrians. Pretty much every other day I have to be on high-alert when using that crosswalk to make sure no drivers are barreling through that red light and into the crosswalk during the walk signal.

I wonder if other people have experienced this? Any ideas on what to do about this?”

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking to the Columbia Heights metro this morning at about 8:45 when I saw that a woman had been hit by a car in the crosswalk at 14th and Otis St NW. I didn’t actually see the accident, but I saw her lying in the road and people were surrounding her trying to help her. The police and ambulance had been called and were just showing up. Just wondering if anyone else was there that wrote in and know if she was ok, or if the driver was caught? It didn’t seem like the firemen who responded at first were in a terribly big rush so I was hoping that meant the woman was going to be ok.

I also heard two other women who were bystanders talking about how this was the second time recently that someone had been hit in that crosswalk and how they wanted a stoplight or stop sign to be placed at that intersection. Maybe this is something we can post to raise awareness for drivers (and pedestrians) to be careful out there.”

On twitter I was sent:

“@PoPville Child struck in crosswalk on 14th street just north of CH. Everyone please slow down….your job can wait 30 seconds.”

Not sure if this is the same incident or if the victim was a child. Anyone else hear anything?

Good News if You’re Taking the Bus to BWI Airport over the coming holidays

“For the benefit of holiday travelers, Metro will offer 80 additional trips on the B30 route between Greenbelt Metrorail Station and Baltimore Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport on November 26, 29, 30, and December 19.

Click on the dates below for specific schedule information (pdf) for the additional trips.

Combined with the regular schedule, these additional trips will provide Metrobus Route B30 service every 20 minutes between 8:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. on these four days.

A special $7 express fare using SmarTrip, CharmCard or cash is charged on Route B30. The fare is $3.50 for seniors and persons with disabilities.”

Phase 2 of the Third Street Tunnel Utility Relocation Project along Mass. Ave and H Street NW Begins Tuesday

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) announces that Phase 2 the Third Street Tunnel Project for utility relocation work along Massachusetts Avenue and H Street NW, between 2nd Street and 4th Street, NW, is scheduled to begin Tuesday, November 18, 2014. The related work, involving removal, relocation and replacement of existing underground utilities will impact both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, and is expected to last six months, weather permitting.

Construction activities during this phase will generally occur during the following hours:

· Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 12 a.m.
· Saturday and Sunday work, scheduled only as needed, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Phase II Traffic Pattern Shifts:

· 3rd Street will be closed north of the H Street; traffic will be redirected around this intersection (to utilize 4th and I Streets) for the full duration of Phase 2.

· H Street will be re-opened westbound, allowing traffic to travel directly through the Massachusetts Avenue intersection from 2nd to 4th Streets; eastbound traffic will remain as currently configured.

· Temporary Lane Closures should be expected between 7:00am to 12:00am. Traffic barrels, cones, and flaggers shall be implemented to redirect traffic as necessary.”
