nextbus

@ravielem tweets us:

“@PoPville dc streetcar is now a choice in the next bus app. Sign that service will finally be starting soon?”

Also as others noted last month, the coming soon signs have been removed from the pylons too.

Ed. Note: At this point I feel like unless these things serve cold beer for a dollar out of vending machines that accept smarttrip – this could become the most anticlimactic new transit option since Smart Bike.

A reader reports:

“Another lovely Monday morning on the Red Line! M Street entrance of NoMa station – literally ONE working gate which everyone entering and exiting had to share… At rush hour. Leading to a line 30 deep to get to the platform.”

From WMATA:

“Reconstruction of the Metrorail system will continue over the weekend of July 31 – August 2 with service adjustments on five rail lines beginning at 10 p.m. Friday and continuing through system closing on Sunday.

This weekend, Green Line trains will operate at regular weekend intervals. Orange, Silver, Blue and Yellow line trains will operate every 24 minutes.

Red Line trains will operate every 8-16 minutes with additional trains between Dupont Circle and Rhode Island Ave between 9 a.m. and 9 p.m.”

From Metro 2025:

“This program provides improvements and expansion at high ridership stations to ensure safe and efficient operations and facilitate passenger movements from street to platform and transfers between lines. The proposed stations, most of which are in the system’s core, already experience crowding or would reach capacity by 2025. Proposed improvements vary from adding escalators and stairs to building pedestrian passageways connecting platforms within a station and between stations.

Purpose and Need

Station capacity is the maximum number of passengers that can safely travel through facilities
within a station. Expanding capacity at high ridership stations ensures safe and efficient movements of passengers and trains throughout the Metro system. The strong ridership growth Metro enjoyed since opening has already placed strains on some stations, where travel demand exceeds the designed capacity, especially in the system’s core. Metro 2025 identifies a group of stations that urgently need significant capacity expansions to alleviate current and anticipated congestion and support a strong economy and sustainable development in the region.”

“Expect 15-20 year delays in both directions due to routine track maintenance.”

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) will close one lane of traffic in each direction on Georgia Avenue, NW, between Barry Place and Florida Avenue, NW in Ward 1 beginning on Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at 7 am, weather permitting. These closures are expected to stay in place until May 2016.

The closures are needed for DDOT to construct dedicated bus lanes and a streetscape along Georgia Avenue, NW. The work includes the replacement of sidewalks, curb and gutters, sidewalk ramps, mill and overlay of the roadway, and new dedicated bus lanes in each direction on Georgia Avenue, NW.

Curbside parking will be restricted while work is underway and ultimately removed upon completion of the project. Emergency No Parking signs are and will be posted a minimum of 72 hours before the start of construction. Sidewalk detours will also be in place while sidewalk repair is in progress. Signage and protective barriers will be used to maintain public safety.

Motorists should expect moderate-to-heavy delays, and are advised to seek alternative routes. DDOT encourages all traveling in this area to stay alert and to obey all construction signs.”

Yesterday @MathewFriedman tweeted us:

“Are these ever going back up? NJ Ave and Warner NW.”

Some discussion followed and I’m curious what folks think here – do these signs actually work? Personally when I would cross at New Hampshire with these signs, every single time I felt like there was a significant possibility of getting killed. Do they give a false sense of safety? What can be done to improve their usefulness or do you think they should be scrapped altogether for something else.
