At approximately 5:50 p.m. Tuesday, MTPD officers received a priority call for an assault in progress at the station. UPDATE from MPD:

“MPD units responded to the 2100 block of 14th Street NW at approximately 8:20am this morning for the report of a crash involving a motor vehicle and a scooter. The investigation on the scene revealed that a passenger in the vehicle opened the driver’s side rear door of the car, striking the scooter who was traveling down the street. The operator of the scooter was transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The operator of the vehicle was issued a notice of infraction for opening or permitting a door to open to traffic side.

Darpwel reported:

“looks like another accident involving a scooter at 14th & W NW. Might be because of the new speed limit on them? I hope everyone is ok!”

“Dear PoPville,

My company is relocating to the VA suburbs from our downtown DC location soon. I live in the District and I’m fortunate enough to walk most places I need to go, so I don’t own a car. The commute via public transportation would be 1.5 hours each way (on a good day).

I’m curious if folks in the community have thoughts on whether to grin and bear the commute? The company is flexible on remote employment, so I’m also looking into coworking memberships, but the membership fee has me hesitating. Any recommendations on how to strike a balance would be great. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve been an avid scooter rider since they first started in DC. I ride them to-and-from work and on occasional short trips all the time. As long as there isn’t snow (yet!) or wet streets, they’ve been an efficient and affordable way to get around. However, I’ve noticed in the past few weeks that more scooters have a safety feature in place that prevents them from going above 10mph.

I heard about this policy being implemented, but did this piece really made it through? (more…)

And I’m OK with that though many will never know the joy of landing the spot. That feeling is indescribable. Like a perfect parallel parking job. I digress.

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced the release of an updated version of its parkDC mobile app. Version 2.0 of the app lets users identify, and navigate to, on-street and off-parking throughout the District of Columbia, with the option of searching for parking spaces by price and/or time period filters.

Developed by DDOT, the parkDC app was released in December 2016 to help reduce the time needed to find parking, improve turnover of high-demand spaces, provide better parking information and reduce congestion. The first version of the app provided real-time parking availability and rate information for the Penn Quarter and Chinatown neighborhoods, in the area bounded by H Street, 3rd Street, E Street and 11th Street NW. This zone is the location of DDOT’s demand-based pricing pilot program that uses meter rate adjustments to improve parking availability.

“Dear PoPville,

Does anyone have any tips for commuting on the metro with an infant? My husband and I are coming to the end of our parental leave periods, and our little one (7 months old) will be starting day care in the city near work soon. We can get a parking spot that is several blocks away from the daycare, but since we live right by a metro station, we are wondering if commuting on the metro with an infant is doable, since it is cheaper and we won’t have to deal with the longer walk from the parking spot. What is the latest time in the morning we could leave and not have to deal with major crowds? How early do we need to leave in the afternoon to avoid crowds?

Would love to know what other parents do!”
