“Rock Creek Parkway to Beach Drive Etiquette?”

“Dear PoPville,

I recently took a new job in Virginia that is not metro accessible, and my commute requires me to take Rock Creek Parkway to Beach Drive home. The “exit” to Beach Drive under the Taft Bridge is a mess every day.

I’m one of those people who dutifully waits in the long line, while dozens of people try to cut it, which only makes the traffic worse. That said, I know the efficiency of zipper merges, and this basically is two lanes merging into one.

Is this “exit” supposed to be a zipper merge? (more…)

Update: Shooting Homicide at the Potomac Avenue Metro Station “Metro is mourning the loss of a heroic employee, Robert Cunningham, who intervened on behalf of a customer today at Potomac Avenue Station and was a victim of senseless gun violence.”

“Metro is mourning the loss of a heroic employee, Robert Cunningham, who intervened on behalf of a customer today at Potomac Avenue Station and was a victim of senseless gun violence. Mr. Cunningham was 64 years old and a mechanic in our power department. In his remembrance, Metro has lowered its flags to half-staff during this time of grief. Readers reported around 1:45pm Monday: “Was there some sort of flyover just now in NW DC?”

Kelly found the answer: “Apparently Michael Collins’ funeral was finally held today at Arlington. Yes, that Michael Collins.”

From Arlington National Cemetery yesterday: “Earlier today, modified military funeral honors with funeral escort were conducted for US Air Force Maj. Gen. Michael Collins in Section 51, a fighter pilot and NASA astronaut who flew on the Gemini 10 and Apollo 11 missions.”

“Sharing info about new SmarTrip fund transfer issue”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to share a frustrating issue I encountered with the new SmartTrip system since they switched over last year. I lost my wallet last week so I bought a new SmarTrip card, registered it online, transferred my funds from my old card, and even topped it up with more funds and set up automatic refill, all online. Apparently, none of that actually gets sent to your new card until you tap your card at the same metro station at least 24 hours apart so it can “localize” (whatever that means). (more…)

“Metro increasing train frequency for customers starting February”

From WMATA:

“Metro announced today that beginning Feb.7, customers on the Blue, Blue + (Yellow Line replacement) and Orange lines will see trains every 12 minutes from 6 – 9 a.m. and 3 – 6 p.m. on Tuesday through Thursday. Beginning Feb. 21, Red Line customers will see trains departing every 8 minutes all day until 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday. (more…)
