DCist is reporting some terrible news this morning:

At approximately 12:20 a.m. on Saturday morning, a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Solly’s Tavern at 11th and U Streets NW, injuring at least six people.

“The building shook,” said bar owner John “Solly” Solomon, who was upstairs when the cab collided with the east side of the building. “The tires were spinning because the driver’s foot was still on the pedal, and it kicked up smoke into the bar.”

This is terribly frightening. And I also feel super bad for Solly who is one of the nicest proprietors in town. This past summer I was sitting with friends on the porch when a car, that must’ve been going over 90 miles an hour, flew by us and eventually crashed into the Children’s hospital building further north on 11th. I wonder if 11th street is particularly susceptible to insane drivers?  Thank God no one was killed in either incident. I’ll try and find out when Solly’s will be able to reopen.

I saw the aftermath at around 6pm this evening but apparently an MPD vehicle got into a collision with a civilian vehicle. The civilian vehicle was completely destroyed. I heard second hand that an ambulance took people away. I’m not sure if the officer or the civilian were taken to the hospital but it was apparently pretty serious. Hopefully they will be alright. More details as they become available.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. Tuesday evening an apparent drunk driver came barreling down 4th St, NW the wrong way on a one way street and smashed into two cars. It appears no one was hurt although there was extensive damage done to one car and minor damage to another. Apparent drunk driver driving the wrong way on a one way street, it’s a miracle nobody was seriously hurt. The car ended up on the corner of 4th and Taylor NW after the driver apparently blew his engine trying to flee the scene. I’m telling you when the temperature reaches 80 degrees crazy things start happening. Again, thank God no one was hurt.

One fire truck, one amblance, one police cruiser and many responders were on the scene within minutes to their credit. And another thing that makes Petworth great: the neighbors resonded in full force. Almost no one on the block remained in their homes. Everyone came outside to make sure no one was hurt and to support those whose cars were damaged. Petworth is by far one of the most cohesive neighborhoods I have ever lived in especially in times of trouble. Everyone is always looking out for their neighbors.
