Thanks to Rebecca for sending this classic:

“This is on Independance and 12 at about 7pm on a weekday. People were going on the other side of the road to turn left………..”

“Dear PoP,

This accident occurred this morning at 14th and Arkansas NW.
I was around the corner walking my dog, so I didn’t see it happen, but I heard it.
By the time I got there, the driver of the minivan was out and sitting on the sidewalk.

About 5 min later, the cavalry arrived…

Not quite sure how a minivan flips over, at what I’m assuming, was not a very high speed accident. Pretty amazing that everyone walked away…”

I’m hearing that a car crashed at the corner of 13th and Euclid Streets, NW Saturday night around 8-10pm. Apparently the guy who crashed the car fled the scene and a helicopter was deployed in the search. The damage seems to be limited to a broken fence/wall and a light post that was knocked over. It must have been quite the scene though because when I was walking up 13th Street Sunday afternoon I heard two separate groups of people talking about it. So if you heard a lot sirens and saw the helicopter spotlight this was likely the cause. If anyone got a picture of the crash please send my way and I’ll update this post.

Thanks to a reader for sending (from Thurs. morning):

“Another terrible crash on the Columbia Road Speedway (500-600 block), this one involving a busload of children on the way to school. What will it take for MPD and DDOT to do something about this pervasive speeding problem on this street?”

DCist is reporting some terrible news this morning:

At approximately 12:20 a.m. on Saturday morning, a taxi driver lost control of his vehicle and crashed into Solly’s Tavern at 11th and U Streets NW, injuring at least six people.

“The building shook,” said bar owner John “Solly” Solomon, who was upstairs when the cab collided with the east side of the building. “The tires were spinning because the driver’s foot was still on the pedal, and it kicked up smoke into the bar.”

This is terribly frightening. And I also feel super bad for Solly who is one of the nicest proprietors in town. This past summer I was sitting with friends on the porch when a car, that must’ve been going over 90 miles an hour, flew by us and eventually crashed into the Children’s hospital building further north on 11th. I wonder if 11th street is particularly susceptible to insane drivers?  Thank God no one was killed in either incident. I’ll try and find out when Solly’s will be able to reopen.

I saw the aftermath at around 6pm this evening but apparently an MPD vehicle got into a collision with a civilian vehicle. The civilian vehicle was completely destroyed. I heard second hand that an ambulance took people away. I’m not sure if the officer or the civilian were taken to the hospital but it was apparently pretty serious. Hopefully they will be alright. More details as they become available.

At approximately 11:00 p.m. Tuesday evening an apparent drunk driver came barreling down 4th St, NW the wrong way on a one way street and smashed into two cars. It appears no one was hurt although there was extensive damage done to one car and minor damage to another. Apparent drunk driver driving the wrong way on a one way street, it’s a miracle nobody was seriously hurt. The car ended up on the corner of 4th and Taylor NW after the driver apparently blew his engine trying to flee the scene. I’m telling you when the temperature reaches 80 degrees crazy things start happening. Again, thank God no one was hurt.

One fire truck, one amblance, one police cruiser and many responders were on the scene within minutes to their credit. And another thing that makes Petworth great: the neighbors resonded in full force. Almost no one on the block remained in their homes. Everyone came outside to make sure no one was hurt and to support those whose cars were damaged. Petworth is by far one of the most cohesive neighborhoods I have ever lived in especially in times of trouble. Everyone is always looking out for their neighbors.
