From the Washington Commanders:

“The Washington Commanders and HKS unveiled a new set of conceptual renderings for their new world-class stadium in Washington, DC, submitted as part of the ongoing NCPC and CFA review process.

Following the initial renderings released in January, the latest visuals continue to build excitement and momentum around the project, showcasing the vision for a dynamic, year-round destination that blends into the urban fabric of the District and carries forward the city’s architectural legacy.

Designed in collaboration with HKS, the renderings provide the most comprehensive look at the evolving stadium concept, highlighting the exterior facade, expansive entry points and arrival experiences. Updated views of the surrounding plazas and public spaces reinforce the goal of creating a neighborhood gathering place and national stage capable of hosting community programming and large-scale events beyond game days.

As the process continues, the design will continue to evolve as stakeholder and community feedback is incorporated.”

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know what the scoop is on the fate of the Rock Creek Tennis Center? I was playing there and learned that the management contract expired on Saturday 2/28 with no new contract in sight. This means that as of Sunday, March 1, all classes and clinics are canceled; coaches and contractors lose their jobs; and court access is suspended. At least that’s what the staff told me. They know nothing about what happens next. Do you?”

“Dear PoPville,

**Mr. President: Public Golf Should Remain Public**

When East Potomac Golf Links opened in 1921 as Washington’s first public course, it was designed to be “the model public playground”—a place where working people, not just country club members, could play the game. President Warren Harding loved it so much he’d skip his private club at Chevy Chase to play there instead. That’s the tradition President Trump now threatens to dismantle.

On December 31st, the Trump administration terminated the National Links Trust’s 50-year lease to operate Washington’s three historic public golf courses—East Potomac, Langston, and Rock Creek. The administration claims the nonprofit defaulted on capital improvements, yet NLT invested over $8.5 million in upgrades, doubled both rounds played and revenue, and kept greens fees affordable while elite courses nearby charge triple the price. The real default isn’t financial—it’s a failure to recognize that federal land should serve the public, not presidential ambitions.

These aren’t ordinary golf courses. (more…)

From the Commanders:

“Today, the Washington Commanders and HKS unveiled the first conceptual renderings of the team’s new, world-class stadium. The roofed stadium will be a dynamic, year-round destination for sports, entertainment and community engagement, integrating sustainable design practices and reimagining the fan experience through immersive spaces.

HKS, a global design firm recognized for shaping some of the world’s most iconic sports and entertainment venues, was selected as the lead architect for the stadium in November and has developed this first round of visuals in partnership with the Commanders team. HKS’ portfolio includes SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. As illustrated in the renderings, the proposed stadium, which will be able to accommodate up to 70,000 plus people, is envisioned as a catalyst for surrounding mixed-use development, delivering lasting value for District residents while serving as both a neighborhood gathering place and a national stage.
