Some of the country’s biggest corporations are finally catching up to Well-Paid Maids.

On May 16, Well-Paid Maids, a living-wage cleaning company here in D.C., raised its starting wages to $22 an hour.

Less than two weeks later, Bank of America and Apple followed suit.

OK, so maybe we’re being a little cheeky. But the fact that Well-Paid Maids raised its starting wages before these billion-dollar companies proves Well-Paid Maids lives by its name.

In fact, let’s do a quick comparison:

  • Well-Paid Maids ended 2021 with about 20 employees and did $800,000 in revenue.
  • Bank of America has more than 200,000 employees and did nearly $90 billion in revenue in 2021.
  • Apple has more than 150,000 employees and did more than $378 billion in revenue in 2021.

Last month, Well-Paid Maids raised its starting wage to $22 an hour.

The District’s only living-wage cleaning company was already paying employees $20 an hour — well over the hourly median wage of $15.51 for cleaners and housekeepers in the DMV area, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

But founder Aaron Seyedian knew it was time for another increase.

Inflation is at an all-time high, and the cost of living continues to rise faster than it has in decades. Food, rent, health care, transportation and more are all becoming more expensive.

When Aaron launched Well-Paid Maids in 2017, he vowed to be different from other cleaning companies. At the time, he paid employees a starting wage of $16 an hour. Through the years, he’s increased the minimum based on the standards calculated by Living Wage For US.

“This is a no BS brand,” he says. “Our name, by design, forces us to be faithful to our mission.”

By supporting Well-Paid Maids, you’re supporting a company dedicated to changing the standards in traditionally low-wage industries.
