The 7th Annual Casino Night Fundraiser is back on Friday, October 7 to benefit La Clinica!

Come join us for this high energy pop-up game night hosted by Flock DC — a local business who puts justice over profit — that includes grand prizes, food, cocktails, and music and unites our incredible network of businesses, partners, fans, and Washingtonians seeking to make a tangible impact on the health of our community.

There still are too many people in our neighborhoods who face barriers to getting care such as transportation, language access and affordable medicine.

We can all play a part in changing this.

For the past 39 years La Clinica has been a trusted, safe and welcoming space for thousands of essential members of our community. Patients like Brizeida rely on La Clinica to provide quality health care, and to fight for health, justice, and inclusion.

Brizeida came to the U.S. speaking no English. She worked hard, studied and dreamed, but felt increasingly isolated and frustrated. When she needed mental health services and a supportive community, La Clinica del Pueblo was there for her. “La Clinica has played one of the most important roles in my life,” she says.

Building a community where health care is accessible regardless of immigration status, language, gender, age, sexual identity, race, class, or income is only possible with the wide support of our community.

By attending, supporting, and or sponsoring Casino Night you are showing your commitment to building communities where all members can thrive.

Established by NEH in 1972, the Jefferson Lecture is the highest honor the federal government bestows for distinguished intellectual achievement in the humanities. This year will mark the 50th anniversary of the honorary lecture series.

A renowned scholar of American literary, religious, and cultural history, Delbanco will deliver his lecture, “The Question of Reparations: Our Past, Our Present, Our Future,” on October 19, 2022, at President Lincoln’s Cottage historic site and museum in Washington, D.C., at 6:30 p.m. The outdoor event is free and open to the public and will stream online at neh.gov.

“I am deeply touched by this high honor,” said Delbanco, “which affords me an opportunity to bring the humanities to bear on a complex and demanding question that has long confronted our country. I have always believed that the study of the past must prove its value by helping us reflect on the challenges of the present and the future.”

Explore the campus, sample classes, meet the faculty, get to know students and parents, and enjoy some live music at Edmund Burke School’s Open House on Saturday, October 22.

Founded in 1968 in Washington, D.C., Burke is an independent, progressive school for 315 students in 6th-12th grade. Drawing from more than 60 zip codes, and all eight wards of D.C., Burke is the place for creative, curious, independent thinkers — looking to enact positive change in their communities.

With their own dedicated spaces, Burke’s Middle School and High School provide distinct educational and social experiences, tailored to the needs of that age group; Burke also fosters connections across grade levels, through performing arts, athletics, assemblies, and an annual all-school art installation.

On Burke’s campus, younger students have a clear view of what comes next — while still having their own spaces. Older students can be mentors and leaders throughout their high school careers, not only as seniors.

Just down the block from the Van Ness Metro and a short walk from Rock Creek Park, Burke offers access to D.C.’s myriad resources. Science classes often head to nearby trails and parks, while history and arts courses frequent dozens of galleries and museums.

The Open House takes place from 10:30 a.m.-12 p.m. for Middle School and from 1:30-3:30 p.m. for High School. Register for the event and learn more here.

We love answering reader questions down in the comments section. (Pop down there and say hi!) One question we get: How much will it cost for Well-Paid Maids to clean my home?

Some people will immediately dismiss Well-Paid Maids as too expensive. If we’re paying our employees a starting wage of $22 an hour and providing them all these good benefits (think: insurance, paid time off, paid commuting costs), won’t customers have to pay more?

The reality is, even though you’re supporting a great cause — the fight for businesses to pay employees living wages — we aim to keep our prices as fair and as competitive as possible.

Rates are based on home size and depend on any add-on services you choose, like loads of laundry or dishes.

When you book a cleaning online, choose your location (e.g. NW, NE, etc.), your home size and a cleaner. Then, you’ll see the price — there are no surprises. Cleaners also accept tips, but they’re never required!

Can you go just ONE DAY without your car? Try it on Car Free Day, September 22.

Commuter Connections, the regional network of transportation organizations coordinated by the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments, challenges the area’s drivers to park their vehicles for one day a year — and this year, “Car Free Day” is Thursday, September 22.

You won’t be alone in the challenge: Commuter Connections has a long list of transportation alternatives to make it easy to get around, and, best of all, those who pledge to participate in Car Free Day will receive a $30 gift promocode and a 24-hour pass for unlimited 45-minute rides via classic Capital Bikeshare. All who take the pledge will also be entered into a raffle for a Samsung tablet, gift cards to popular restaurants, annual memberships, transit passes and more.

Take the pledge now!

Car Free Day is an international event that heightens awareness of the impact of traffic on the quality of life in the region and is celebrated in more than 2,000 cities in 46 countries.

“Car Free Day is an important event for our region and presents an opportunity for us to come together and reduce our overall traffic congestion by pledging to take alternative transportation modes like riding the bus, Metrorail, or carpooling with friends and family,” said Commuter Connections Director Nicholas Ramfos.

“We encourage everyone to take the pledge to go car free on September 22 and embrace more sustainable ways to travel into the office, school, or anywhere they need to go.”

Any effort to skip driving your car alone is an effort that supports Car Free Day goals: Less traffic and cleaner air. Work from home, shop online, share a ride to work or the movies — there are countless ways to participate. Needless to say, Car Free Day is open to everyone in the Washington, D.C. Metropolitan region.
