Here’s the pop up on the 1300 block of Oak Street, NW. Here’s what it looked like in January. It looks a lot better than I thought it would:

Do you think it came out better than your initial reaction?
And here’s a sad city sign:

This is a sign from a jewelry store on Wisconsin Ave. in Georgetown. I can’t look at this photo without laughing. It is just so insanely random. And of course when I took the photo the store was closed…

He, understandably, couldn’t figure out why I wanted this photo. I also couldn’t figure out why he didn’t want me to take the photo but I tried explaining it. After a few minutes of discussion it wasn’t going anywhere, so in the end I just said I was a huge fan of tomatoes…

Thanks to a reader for sending. Any guesses what it is referring to?

I’m usually quite fond of dog signs. But I think this one goes over the line. I think we’d get the point if it was just squatting. The excrement is a bit much… Or I guess it’s saying it’s ok if the dog urinates, it just can’t defecate. Oh lord, I’m sorry, I think I’m thinking way too deeply on this one!

The reader writes:
“I don’t know if this qualifies as a sweet city sign, and maybe you’ve shown it before, but I just love the mural of the giant fish leaping in the air. I couldn’t fit it in the pic, but directly to the left of the lettering is the painting of the smaller fish. Not as well depicted, but endearing in its own way. The building is located on the Southwest corner of P and 14th. And then just to keep with the fish theme, I thought I’d include an international sweet city sign, from the Notting Hill area of London.”
Hell’s yes this is a sweet city sign!

Photo from London after the jump. (more…)

I was struck by the contrast of the signs above with the old building (taken by ewilfong).

And I thought the above was just totally random. Probably would have been good for a caption contest…

We’ve judged the Moderno located at 12th just south of U St, NW. We’ve even discussed what they mean by European style residences. I swear I’m not picking on them, I actually think the building looks pretty cool, but what’s up with their Remy Martin ads on the first floor? Are they just waiting to get retail in? I actually thought the first floor was just the lobby. If you lived in the building would you be upset at having a huge ad like this on your building?
