I’ve always been a big fan of Wonderland (11th and Kenyon Streets, NW) but I think the real love comes from our shared love of old city signs. (Their cousin Looking Glass Lounge, at Georgia and Princeton, (a PoP advertiser) also has many great signs). Anyway, I’ve been meaning to put the amazing one from above up for a while. It’s is a real sign that Wonderland’s owner Matthew salvaged.

Also of note, which I surprisingly just learned, is that they have the original Nob Hill sign (former occupant of the building) on the ceiling toward the bathrooms and kitchen:

“Dear PoP,

Diamond District put up a few new signs yesterday including one unveiling their new logo. I think you’ll like it.”

This is the restaurant at 1612 14th Street, NW that will be run by Chef Barton Seaver.

Incidentally another reader wrote in asking if I had an opinion about Seaver being voted best chef of the year by Esquire Magazine. Honestly I have no opinion. Washingtonian wrote about it here. Does anyone feel strongly about the Esquire controversy?

I do however feel strongly about the logo. I think it is probably the coolest logo in town.

Thanks to all the readers who sent me word about Samber Market’s new signage on Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. The new signs look great. Any fans of this market? How’s the beer and wine selection?

I’ve also been meaning to post the below classic sign from Georgia Ave. up in the 3 syllable streets:

A reader sent in this sign a while ago but I had the opportunity to run across it myself last weekend. It is so amazing I had to re-post for those that missed it. I’d also like to add, from the files of you can’t judge a book by its cover, there were a bunch of “tough” looking fellows sitting out front but when I walked over to take the photo they were unbelievably nice and friendly to me.

But bottom line is that this sign may very well be tops in the city.

I wonder why back in the day they used letters for the first two numbers? Was it just easier that way when you’d say, “operator, ring me JO 3-1000”? Anyone know the reason?

I thought it was interesting that after noticing this one a couple hours later I found another from a different company.
