I thought DC collected all the trash in town. What is “Good Friends” waste management? Do they have an agreement with the city or are some people paying extra for this service?

This reminds me of the Seinfeld episode where Kramer decides he’s not going to accept the US postal service anymore so he bricks up his mailbox. So this person is refusing to accept the Yellow Book. But like Kramer, I think they are fighting a war they can not possibly win.

No cell phones? I can’t decide if that is the coolest thing I’ve seen or if it is slightly insane. It’s not like it’s a movie theatre but I generally despise people’s phone conversations. So, ok, I’ve decided this is a pretty cool policy. What do you think?

From a reader:

“On Saturday, April 19th, from 10am-4pm, over 50 Brookland neighbors and several faith based organizations have partnered together to hold simultaneous yard sales. It will be a great way to bring exposure to our neighborhood, and maybe get some good deals. All the info, including a flyer and clickable map are available on: brooklandblog.blogspot.com

A few weeks back we pondered the psychics along Mt. Pleasant Street. So then I thought why don’t we send our intern in Mt. P to one. And there you have it. Below Tina recounts her experience. Although I don’t know why it cost five times the price in the window…

I’ve never been quite convinced that “psychic powers” actually exist, but this weekend curiosity finally got the better of me and I stopped in for a psychic reading with Laura at 3107 Mount Pleasant Street.

I was hoping for a crystal ball and a woman in a turban, but what I got was a pleasant old woman and a pretty barren room in the building that used to house Yoly’s Clothing and Variety store. Laura told me she has had this gift for many years and has been reading palms in DC for 20 years. She used to be in Adams Morgan, but moved up the road a little to test the waters in a new neighborhood. So far business has been slow, but she’s got plenty of regulars, as well as another shop located at 15th and L. That one is run by her daughter who also has this “gift” which apparently is hereditary and sometimes skips a generation. Laura’s other daughter

I was shocked and appalled to see this senseless display. Call a friend. Remember tomorrow is always another day.

I tried to take it but I could only carry it for 3 blocks on my shoulders before I got tired. Then of course I had to carry it back 3 blocks to its original home. My dream for a new dryer (and washer) will have to wait. Ed. note: yes I am just kidding about carrying it for 3 blocks, I was only able to carry it for 2 blocks.

Every now and then I forget just how funny the Onion newspaper can be. My faith was restored when I saw the April 3rd Edition.

You have to read the story titled Report: Nation’s Gentrified Neighborhoods Threatened by Aristocratization. It is hilarious and below is an excerpt:

“According to a report released Tuesday by the Brookings Institution, a Washington-based think tank, the recent influx of exceedingly affluent powder-wigged aristocrats into the nation’s gentrified urban areas is pushing out young white professionals, some of whom have lived in these neighborhoods for as many as seven years.”
