UPDATE: This is a Jenny Holzer project.

Ami reports: “No logo, no party or sponsor affiliation. Circled empty Dupont Circle for a while, with a professional photographer in the circle taking photos of them. One other slogan I did not photograph was “covid presidency”. Anyone have any idea who they are?” (more…)

One reader shares:

“PLEASE BE ADVISED OF AN EVENT AT THE Ronald Reagan Building beginning today, August 20, 2020 and ending Friday, August 28, 2020 that may impact your accessibility into the premises. Due to security restrictions and security fencing perimeters staged around the building, including the Woodrow Wilson Plaza.”

Timing, again, feels right to remind folks of our Democracy Tree. It was planted in 2000.

“This Tree is dedicated to the more than half million veterans, taxpayers, and citizens of the District of Columbia who, despite fighting in foreign wars, paying their full measure of taxes and faithfully serving their country, continue to have no voting representation in the Congress of the United States of America.

Here’s to hoping we are able to change the name to The 51st State Tree soonest.

Readers started reporting around 10pm: “what is going on on 16th and V / Florida NW? Multiple cop cars on both corners plus back along 17th and Florida”

at 10:30pm:

“Just rode my bike through 18th and Columbia. Small fires on the road, newspaper boxes strewn throughout, heavy police presence. People were already gone west on Columbia.”

at 11:45pm:

“Protesters have been kettled at 18th and Willard for at least an hour. Whole block police taped off. Chants of “why are we being detained?” breaking out.”

at 12am:

“One protester in medical distress just taken away on a stretcher.”

18th and Willard St, NW

The Washington Post reported:

“Tysean Hoffman, of Alexandria, said the group of marchers numbered about 50 and began to march from Meridian Hill Park (also known as Malcolm X Park) toward the Third District police station and throughout Northwest Washington.

Some marchers lit fireworks, turned over trash cans and may have lit at least one trash can on fire, Hoffman said. But there was no damage to property and the marchers were otherwise peaceful.”

“Dear PoPville,

Was leaving the Home Depot in Brentwood today [Friday] and saw this woman at the corner of Rhode Island Row. As a woman and her daughter, who could not have been more than five, walked by she picked up the poster with the graphic image on it and tried to block their way on the sidewalk. She got within two feet of them and kept moving as they tried to avoid her, it was painful to watch the daughter look at the poster and then look up and say something to her mother. As a bonus the woman had no mask on.

Regardless of how you feel about abortion, that is f’d up.”

And on Sunday morning: (more…)

Last week we had a hot debate over “Should I return to school and teach on August 31st or not?”. Thanks to all who passed on this powerful article from The Atlantic:

“America’s teachers are caught in a trap, set by indecisive and conflicting sectors of failed leadership that have never been in their position and can’t possibly relate to the unique challenges they face. I wouldn’t trust the U.S. secretary of percussion to tell me how to play “Smells Like Teen Spirit” if they had never sat behind a drum set, so why should any teacher trust Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to tell them how to teach, without her ever having sat at the head of a class?
