Wow, this house is huge. What do you think of the renovation? I know folks have questioned in the past exactly how much a home in Petworth can go for and I suspect this price may bring similar comments. But I am curious to hear what you think about the home itself. This 7 bed/4 bath is going for $899,000.

When I previewed Corehaus a few weeks ago I promised to let folks know when they’d be open to the public. I just got word they’ll have a grand opening this Sat. from 4 – 8pm. Light food and refreshments will be served. This is the spot that owner, James Kerns, described as “taking old stuff and making it cool again”. Definitely worth checking out! 825 Upshur Street, NW is just a few storefronts down from Domku.

From an email:

“The Petworth Neighborhood Library, located at 4200 Kansas Ave. N.W., will close for renovation at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, December 19, 2009. An interim location, in the library’s parking lot, will open on Monday, January 11, 2009

The library will remain in the interim location until spring 2011, when the renovated Petworth Neighborhood Library opens.

During the transition, library users can renew books checked out from the Petworth Neighborhood Library at any other D.C. Public Library location or online at dclibrary.org. Books can be returned to any DC Public Library location. Holds will be available for pickup at the Watha T. Daniel-Shaw Interim Library located at 945 Rhode Island Ave. N.W.

Fusion located at 4815 Georgia Ave, NW near Moroni and Bros. has long been one of my “new” favorite restaurants. I can hardly believe it has already been a year since they’ve opened. The owner, Barry, pictured above could be one of the nicest proprietors I’ve met (and I’ve been fortunate to meet many). Barry previously worked at Rasika and Bombay Club and has brought that quality of dining to Petworth. But more than just the great food, he has created a warm neighborhood spot where regular diners often greet each other like old friends. This was evidenced at the party thrown to celebrate the anniversary. It was filled with an amazingly friendly and diverse crowd. So congrats to Barry, his family and colleagues, and I look forward to many more years of quality dining at Fusion.

“Dear PoP,

I picked up the attached notice of suspension from the Park View blog. Apparently, the shooting that occurred on Rock Creek Church Road on Saturday, December 5, 2009 was part of a scuffle that began in Sweet Mango Café. Sweet Mango has been a staple in the Petworth Community and a favored spot for jerk chicken in DC. Many of us have found it to be one of the few edible spots on Georgia Avenue. Still, as a result of the crime and other offenses that have occurred this year, Chief of Police Cathy Lanier has deemed the establishment an “imminent danger to the health and welfare of the community.” Based on her recommendation, DCRA has suspended the establishment’s liquor license pending a hearing to occur tomorrow.”

Wow this is crazy. Thanks to all who sent emails about this. You can read the full complaint below:

You really have to read the report, it is truly unbelievable. Basically, two patrons were kicked out, the shooting occurred and MPD found blood inside the vestibule of Sweet Mango while nobody from the establishment called the police. Additionally, they are accused of operating an illegal nightclub in the basement. Sweet Mango is located on New Hampshire Ave. across from the Petworth Metro.

“Dear PoP,

After a long separation, my dog will be moving back in with me (from my parents’) over the holidays. I’m relatively new to the neighborhood, and have seen a few dogs around, but I’m curious if there are some suggestions about dog friendly parks in the Petworth/Parkview area?

Also, I’d love to know if folks have any suggestions for dog walkers, vets, and boarding. I know – it’s a lot of dog questions, but I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks a lot!”

Well, we had some good recommendations for dog park/dog friendly spots here. Eric Nuzum wrote about doggie day care here. Can anyone recommend some good dog walkers, vets and/or boarding spots?

A reader writes:

“Water is out in a large swath of Petworth. “Pumps have failed” and WASA will not say when they will be fixed.”

Anyone having water problems this morning?

I received a number of emails about the following incident. Will update when word comes out from MPD.

“I live on Rock Creek Church Rd, directly across from Eighth Street, right by the Petworth Metro, and last night a little after 1 a.m. I heard a lot of shouting and I think at least one gunshot; sure enough, the police were swarming and took two people to the hospital, there was some blood on the street. Weirdly, both people came out of a silver car, not sure how it was involved.”

I’m not sure if it’s related to this incident from the 3700 block of New Hampshire Ave. From MPD at 2:31am:

“4D officers are on the scene of a shooting in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Ave., NW. Two adult Hispanic males were shot in the legs. The injuries appear to be non-life threatening. They were transported to local hospitals. There is no lookout at this time for any suspect. Anyone having information about this event is urged to call 1-888-919-CRIME or 727-9099.”

Thanks to a reader for the heads up on the work going on at 3543 Georgia Ave. across from the EL Haynes charter school. Sadly, there was a bit of a language barrier in my brief chat with the workers out front. They did however confirm that a restaurant was going in. When I asked what type they said American but I’ll be sure to follow up when they open. And in nearby news it was nice to see the new Senior Center rising a half block to the south at Georgia and Newton:

It’s not often I get emailed props for the Petworth Safeway, in fact this may be the first one, glad to hear it!

“Dear PoP,

I was at the Petworth Safeway (3830 Georgia Avenue) last night around 8:30 PM. While waiting in line, a checkout clerk opened up the register next to mine and called me over to his register. As I was coming around, someone else rushed in front of me, even though I only had one item. As I was allowing the annoyance to settle in and decide what to do, the clerk reached back to me and told the other person that he had asked me to come to his register and that I was first. The other person was pretty rude, but the clerk kept his composure despite offensive comments from the first person, and just told him, politely, that I was there first and he would take care of him in a minute.

What the clerk didn’t know, is that I was buying hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in my dog at the advice of ASPCA poison control. He had eaten onions, and in fact it was very important for me to get home as soon as possible. (Many people don’t know this but onions are extremely toxic to dogs, more so than chocolate, and even a small amount can cause great harm).

I didn’t get the clerk’s name but he is a middle-aged thin black man with a mustache, I’ve seen him there before, and I just wanted to recognize his professional behavior which stands out in a world where I’ve gotten used to often apathetic and sometimes downright rude behavior from checkout clerks.”
