Lots of exciting news has been hitting Georgia Ave lately with the coming soon signs for Sala Thai and Park Place Cafe. Now we can look forward to the coming of Billy Simpson’s which is the new venture coming from the owners of Marvin. It’s a small step but always nice to see progress actually start.

Here’s the other building that will be demo’d. Though remember it is only internal demo as the building itself (first photo above) has historic significance.

We’ve been discussing this possibility since February of 2008. At long last we have got the good word. Thanks to a reader for the heads up. In the back of the ANC4C Newsletter (that comes with the Current) they write:

“Plans have been announced for a Petworth Farmers Market on 9th Street NW between Taylor and Upshur, to be held on Thursdays from 2-7pm starting in spring. Interested sponsors, vendors and volunteers should contact PetworthMarket (at) gmail (dot) com.”

Finally!!! Though how many people will be able to patronize the market during these hours on Thursdays?

The great Petworth News blog run by Bill Crandall has gone on hiatus today. I just wanted to write a quick note of thanks for all he has done for Petworth and neighborhood blogging. Bill started Petworth News in 2004 and was one of the first exclusively neighborhood blogs. He paved the path for the many neighborhood blogs that exist today.

On a personal note, Bill is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet and his love for Petworth cannot be questioned. Back in 2004 blogs were often of the snarky variety and Bill always stuck to the title of his blog – News. I consider Bill a bit of a mentor as he was the first person to really support and encourage my work here at PoP. Bill has contributed here in the past and I hope he will do so again in the future.

Since Bill started Petworth News he and his wife have had a beautiful baby girl (who’s no longer a baby) and he started a full time teaching gig. Bill is also an amazing photographer. I’m sure we’ll be hearing more from Bill on many fronts in the future. In the meantime I just wanted to express my gratitude to him for all of his great work with the neighborhood and the personal support he has given me. Thanks Bill and good luck!

Someone in the comments yesterday asked for an update on the Sports Bar coming to 3632 Georgia Ave. I emailed the project manager and he told me that they expect all permits to be in order in around 3 weeks at which time construction will get underway. I’m also told they are finalizing their menu which I will post when it is completed. It sadly does not look like they’ll be open in time for the Super Bowl but hopefully shortly thereafter.

For those that haven’t heard of this development, you can read an interview I did with the owner and project manger of the Green Room Sports Bar here.

The flier says:

“Fully available! Needs paint, carpet, and one smart buyer. One bank, but be patient to get this great deal. We’ll get it done, and you’ll get instant equity!!”

You can find more info and photos here.

It was originally going for $400,000 but has now dropped to $345,000. Sound reasonable? What do you think of the house itself?

“Dear PoP,

I talked to the folks in the leasing office at Park Place and they let me know what all was going on with the retail space below. Sala Thai wants to open at the end of this month! Not sure if that’s possible, since construction hasn’t even started. The Park Place Cafe on the northeast corner hung coming soon signs in their windows yesterday! It looks like within a month or two we will have some great new additions to the neighborhood. The other rumor I got from them was that Ben’s Next Door on U St is seriously considering opening a second location at Park Place, even though no papers have been signed yet.”

Ed. Note: I’m also told that the Sala Thai space will also offer sushi like they do on U Street. If the folk’s from Ben’s Next Door commit to this space, I may be very well attempt my first back flip!

I’ve always thought the architecture of this church was pretty unremarkable. While I’m not a particularly religious person I was happy to see the church get some color. What do you think of the size of the painting? Too big, too small, just right, or it shouldn’t be there at all?

I wasn’t terribly excited about the Cricket grand opening in this location but the Sala Thai liquor license application got me pretty psyched. The Sala Thai spot is located a few storefronts south of Cricket on Georgia Ave.

It actually will take up two spaces:

The occupancy load will be 80 and I was pretty excited to see that they are requesting a summer garden area to seat 16:
