“Dear PoPville,

I’m trying to get the word out about a hit and run that occurred early Sunday morning around 12:46 AM to see if anyone has any information. I was crossing Columbia Rd. at the intersection of Quarry Rd. from South to North (from the Federalist pig side to Quarry rd) with my dog Tiger Lily. There is a well marked crosswalk with three different signs reminding drivers that there is a crosswalk and that it is DC law to stop for pedestrians. We looked to the left and the car stopped, started to cross, and the car coming from 16th street seemed to be stopping, then didn’t. The car hit Tiger head on at about 20 mph, then hit the breaks and I was hit very slightly. She is a small 45 lb. dog and was propelled about 10 feet up and 15 feet out before hitting the ground on the other side of Quarry rd; the leash was ripped out of my hand on impact. Fortunately nothing was broken, but she was in so much shock that she took off in a sprint, making it across several more streets almost to Woodley park, where some fellow citizens caught her on the Calvert street bridge. Several Adams Morgan citizens jumped in to help and we had a small army of us chasing after to catch her. I am so thankful to those neighbors. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My dog, who is a 6 month old golden retriever 25 pound puppy, stuck his head through a fence where someone had made a make-shift rat poison station in a yard in Mount Pleasant (close to the intersection of Irving and Mount Pleasant Street but it was in someone’s yard.) This consisted of blue cylinders of rat poison out in the open on a piece of newspaper with a bait of half a corn on the Cobb. Being a puppy who eats everything really quickly my dog ate it (both the rat poison and the Cobb)and now is in the hospital under a 24 hour watch. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was heading into DCUSA in Columbia Heights yesterday afternoon when I saw something that disturbed me. There’s always a crowd of people outside the entrance selling random things: fruit, art, toys, shoes, whatever.

This time, I saw a pair of glass tanks, one containing fish, the other turtles.

As you would expect there was a huge crowd around the tank, reaching in, touching the animals, arguing with the vendor, everything. (more…)

“Hey DC DPR, the Upshur dog park is still closed for maintenance, but according to the sign that should have been over 12 days ago. What’s the status? Lola was very disappointed she couldn’t run around with her dog friends this morning.”

DPR responds:

“Sorry for any confusion. The project was delayed due to rain several times. A new sign will be posted. We will reopen this week!”

On Friday we posted the awful report “A friend’s soon-to-be ex-husband kidnapped her dog and dropped him off in the middle of DC”. Thanks to Dan for passing on the great update from the Humane Rescue Alliance yesterday:

“It was a joyous reunion this morning for Frenchy and his mom Corrine. According to Corrine, Frenchy was stolen earlier this week and abandoned in DC. Frenchy was reported as a stray yesterday and we were able to identify that he was microchipped and matched the lost description.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

A friend’s soon-to-be ex-husband kidnapped her dog and dropped him off in the middle of DC Tuesday afternoon. We are thinking maybe NW.

She had recently lost her mother and her preemie twins, so Frenchie has been everything to her. She just found out her husband has been cheating on her.

Her dog, Frenchy, has been her rock. He is a black golden doodle and micro-chipped.

Please be on the lookout for Frenchy! #FindFrenchy”

“Dear PoPville,

Shot in the dark for the owners of this lost pet:

So I was enjoying a late brunch on the patio of Napoli Pasta Bar Sunday afternoon (great brunch, by the way), lazily watching the Sherman Avenue traffic roll past in the wilting heat, when a black truck turning left on Girard Street catches my eye — and I’ll be damned if there isn’t a long, white ferret dangling out the passenger-side window. The passenger, it seemed, was stone asleep, and the driver apparently unaware of the critter trying to make its escape. The truck makes its turn, disappears up the street, and the next thing I see is a white furry face peeking out from behind the wheel of a parked car — the little guy made his escape. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Around noon yesterday at the intersection of 13th and V Street, NW, a male and female were seated on a bench while I was walking home with two dogs. The woman got off the bench and walked out onto the sidewalk between the dogs, and twice said “gimmie [the dogs]”, and she grabbed their leashes. When I pulled the dogs away, she continued to follow me partway down the block until I was able get away and enter my home through the back. Wanted to warn fellow dog parents.”
