The race is on!

And I’m not gonna reveal the votes yet but it’s been narrowed down a bit and it looks like we’ve got a tight three way race between Winnie (hamster), Rocky (turtle) and Claude-Philippe (snail). If you haven’t voted yet you can still do so here. Stay tuned for the Dog and cat semifinalists next week!

The reader is looking for a pet friendly building closer to Mt. Pleasant and writes:

“I am hoping you and your wonderful readers can help me out with something. My 40 lb. dog and I need a new home, but I’ve been having a really hard time finding affordable dog-friendly buildings (or condos) in the Mt. Pleasant/ColHeights/U Street/Adams Morgan area. Do you have any tips for places I may have overlooked?”

Anyone have any good advice for finding a place that takes pets in that area?

Thanks to a reader for sending the news and an email from the owners of Dogs by Day/Green Pets. The reader mentions that they believe the proposed new site is at 1711 Florida Ave, NW. The owner of Dogs by Day is requesting your help to obtain a C of O:

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

As many of you already know, Dogs by Day and GreenPets are moving out of our current location to a new building a few blocks away. We are being forced to move for a number of reasons; mainly the building is no longer safe and the landlord refuses to do any repairs. In addition, the landlord thinks a large restaurant would pay more rent than we have offered, so unfortunately, we must leave. The good news is we found a wonderful new building with a terrific landlord only a couple blocks away. We have also found a second location a couple of blocks south as well. We’re hoping that with these 2 locations we’ll be able to serve you even better than we can now.

That being said, we need your help to move forward. As is true with all dog care facilities, we must apply for a special Certificate of Occupancy no matter how long we’ve been in business. We are fortunate to have a meeting scheduled for this Friday the 13th to discuss this issue. We are urging all of you who are willing to write a letter of support and or sign the petitions we have at the front desks of both Dogs by Day and GreenPets.

We have been in business for over 11 years and we’d very much like to continue for another 11 years. Please help us and fax your letter to the number listed below. Any words of support would be most appreciated.

I apologize for the urgency however, we need letter of support submitted by noon, Friday, August 13th. Please fax once you completed your letter.

Thank you so very much for your prompt attention to this matter.

Gratefully,

Ok, we’ve had an amazing first round with over 300 awesome pets! The task of narrowing it down to semifinalists is nearly impossible. Remember there will be 3 semifinal rounds for ‘Other’, Dog, and Cat with the winners of each category facing off in the final for the title of Coolest Pet in PoPville. To help me pick Dog and Cat semifinalists, in addition to your comments I’ve enlisted some guest judges more on that later. Now please, please, please don’t be ridiculous and stuff the “ballot box”. We are on the honor system here but if there is an obvious fixing of the poll I will disqualify your pet. Seriously. Don’t do it! You can have your friends vote, you can put it on facebook or twitter but don’t stay up all night clearing your cache and voting 100 times yourself (it’s happened before). I am keeping results hidden and will show them at the end.

Anyway all the pets really were great and getting to post them up every afternoon for the last month has made my summer afternoons a lot more fun. So allow me to introduce the ‘Other’ Semifinalists. Voting will be tallied by poll and the poll will close at 11:59pm Friday night.

Ed. Note: The deadline has passed for entries, we got over 300! If you missed the deadline, save your shots for next year, sorry no exceptions. Remember if you have a favorite please let me know. Though, don’t make up names and “vote” for your pet multiple times. If you do so, and I catch you, (which is not hard to catch) your pet will be disqualified. Stay tuned for semi final rounds coming soon.

Durga

“This is Durga. We rescued her from a high-kill shelter in South Carolina through Lucky Dog Rescue. She has an unmatched sense of adventure – and energy level! Her hobbies include devouring chew toys and rawhide bones, and terrorizing squirrels throughout the U Street neighborhood. Her dream job – rat exterminator.”

Stinky

“This is Stinky. He has traveled on three continents, and is very happy to be settled now in Petworth. His primary responsibility is keeping an eye on the dog. He takes this duty very very seriously. It’s not all work though – he always takes time to stop and smell (and sometimes eat) the roses.”

Violet

“Violet was adopted from WARL a year ago and loves snow, playing fetch and eating sticks.”

Lots more great entries after the jump. (more…)

Binkles

“The ultimate lap-cat, my one-eyed rescue kitty Mr. Binklesworth Trevor York St. Kitt the Third (Binky), now 11 years old. He’s lonely as he lost his brother a month ago, so now he’s trying to make new friends with all the neighborhood cats (and raccoons). Vote Binky!”

If the coolest pet contest has you itching for one, here’s a nice opportunity. From an email:

“Last week, a VERY friendly cat followed us home from dinner via Swann Street. He literally just followed us in to our building after we pet him on the stoop. We couldn’t keep him because we have our 95lb Lucy, so our neighbor watched him for the night and we took him to the shelter giving them the caveat that if they don’t have room, they’ll call us.

Well, the DC shelter does not have room (shocker!) but they have given him all of his shots and agreed to allow us to pay for him to be neutered and try to find a home for him…or just release him back where we found him, fixed and given shots.

I thought I would reach out to readers of PoP that might be interested in a very friendly 2 year old silver tabby. It worked for the orange tabby kitten that my boyfriend got out of a car engine on S Street (and someone else was able to catch) so why not?!

I’m forwarding some pictures that we took while we had him. Our neighbors said he got along well with their cats and was very people oriented. Also, he was very comfortable around Lucy to a point (see picture) so I think that given time, he could be very good with a dog that doesn’t have a prey drive.

If interested, please contact us via email ASAP. He’ll be neutered Monday and we’ll release him on Tuesday if we can’t find a home for him.

Truvy

“This is my 9 month old Cream Frenchie named Truvy. She is gonna be the Hostess at Logan 14 Aveda Salon and Spa when I open the end of August.”

Roo

“This is Roo, a cockatiel. In addition to flying around the apartment, he likes to whistle the Andy Griffith theme song and play games of hide-and-seek with his humans.”

Percy

“This is Percy the rabbit that I adopted from the Humane Society. Since it is not too safe to bring him outside to enjoy grass underfoot, I bring the (wheat) grass to him.”

Lots more great entries after the jump. (more…)
