Adrian is a dog owner who lives in Shaw.

Attention dog owners and dog lovers – spring is here. On a few occasions, the weather has already warmed up enough to do some outdoor dining and imbibing. That was the case last weekend, so naturally I was excited to have my dog (@DogNamedBatman) accompany my friends and I for an afternoon at Standard only to learn that dogs have to stay outside the fence. Some may prefer the dog-free atmosphere, but there are a lot of dog owners in the city who probably don’t mind dogs hanging out at the bar with them.

I did some research, including collecting feedback from dog listserves and dog owners to start this list. I will note that I was not able to personally confirm all of these details, and some of the information may be outdated. So if you know of any spots that have not been listed here please add them to the comments.

maddie

Dear PoPville,

Maddie is an 11-week old puppy who escaped from her foster home in Anacostia yesterday and we’re still searching for her. She is a City Dogs Rescue foster puppy.

Maddie snuck out under her foster family’s backyard fence at 15th and U St SE at 4pm yesterday. She is a sweet puppy, and wouldn’t hurt a fly, but she is most likely pretty scared so nobody should chase her. Her most prominent markings are the white star on her nose and white on her neck and belly. She has a black nylon collar on.

If anyone spots her or hears anything, please call (703)350-9630.

He is very timid and shy. If you see him, please kneel and tap your leg. Be very gentle — he is sensitive!”

Update:

Last Sighting: Tuesday night at 9pm Booth was seen by a man on Massachusetts Ave NW. He ran away into Rock Creek Park on the trail near the Italian Embassy.

Please continue to contact me with any sightings.

And, will be canvassing today at 5:30pm, meeting at Stoddert School in Glover Park. Would love help!”

Dear PoPville,

Last night at about 7:30 in the 1100 block of Park Rd NW, this very well fed young lab ran up to me and my dog while we were on a walk. She’s super friendly. Unfortunately she only had a chain collar with a make-shift leash attached, no tags. I called DC animal control who said they’d scan her for a microchip but also seemed confident she’d be claimed. She was very thirsty when I brought her so may have traveled far. She’s super sweet and someone must be missing her terribly.

Update: “I just got off the phone with the NY Ave shelter and she was microchipped and they found her owner who is picking her up today. Her name is Pepper. :-) ”

Dear PoPville,

A friend mentioned I should tell you about a recent pit bull attack that happened to my rescue dog. Please post so other people may watch out for this guy and his dogs. They are clearly dangerous and I am concerned next time they will kill a dog, or worse, bit a child. This guy seemed sketchy and I got the vibe this might be a regular thing.

Since having my dog for 5 months, I worked very hard to socialize him. I made sure he was around other dogs, including pit bulls, I am not biased against them and know they can be good dogs. He was abused and rescued from a high kill shelter in SC and this attack has set us back to square one in terms of his fear and nervousness outside. I was walking him on a leash in Kalorama park (this isn’t a dog park) Fri evening at 9:30. We came across a young white boy in a hoodie sitting on a bench with his two aggressive pit bulls. One of the dogs was white and the other was grey. they were both wearing large, black leather, metal studded collars. Both pit bulls were very aggressive as we approached so I told the young guy my dog was a rescue and was nervous around bigger dogs and tried to walk around them. By that point it was too late, the grey dog was not on a leash and lunged to attack my dog. I pulled my dog into the air by his leash, and that is why I think the pit bull didn’t kill him.

The pit bull’s owner didn’t seem alarmed, didn’t say anything, got up from the bench, not in a hurry, and somehow got ahold of his dog, who let my dog go and my dog took off running. Thankfully he is still alive, and got off “lucky”. The vet bill was $600, I took of after my dog and haven’t seen the guy or his dogs. He never said anything to me, apologized or anything. A friend has mentioned she has seen this guy around Adams Morgan and the dogs usually have muzzles on. This night the grey dog was not on a leash. Attached is a picture of my dog,I hope this will help other people to save the trauma and the expense. If people see this guy around, they should call animal control at 311. A report has been filed and they are patrolling the neighborhood for this guy and the dogs.

The city has asked if anyone sees this guy or his dogs to call 202-576-6664 and press option 1, they are patrolling the area for the dogs. They want to get this dog off the street before he kills another dog or harms a person.

Dear PoPville,

Coworkers just found a puppy in SW near Fort McNair [2nd & S St SW]. We’re taking him up to Washington Humane Society [NY Ave facility] now. He’s very friendly, but also extremely dirty, so he may have been missing for a few days.

Lu

Dear PoPville,

Yesterday evening I was walking my dog on Columbia Rd NW near Warder St when all of a sudden a pitbull came bounding across the street in front on traffic and attacked my dog.

The scene was horrible, it had my poor Lu by the neck and would let go. I was pounding it on its head and body, the owner quickly came over and tried to pry the dogs jaws from my Lu’s neck, but the pitbull would not let go. By this time, people had stopped their cars and one gentleman came over to see if he could help. the pitbull’s owner asked if he had any kind of spray he could spray the dog. He went into his car and got a can and started to spray the dog in the face. Meanwhile I kept pounding the dogs head and the owner was still trying to get its jaws apart. Finally the dog released my Lu.

I had to rush her to the vet where I was told she had a hole a bit larger than a silver dollar and a puncture wound on the neck. Both the dog’s owner and I suffered cuts, bites, and contusions on our hands. One thing I have to say is the owner took full responsibility and called Animal Control. We have a report in and hopefully an officer will come today to inspect Lu.

We had a horrible night, Lu couldn’t stop shaking, and today she is sullen with little appetite, and obviously pain. My hands are sore and swollen. We are two tough ladies and will get through this. But to your readers I just ask please keep your dogs leashed, especially with these large unpredictable dogs, as you never know when your dog will decide to attack. This was unprovoked, and as I said the dog crossed the street to get to mine. I know people say it is not the dog its the owner and how she/he trains the dog, but I sincerely think that this owner is a good owner…something just snapped in her dog.
