Dear PoPville,

I’ve lived on my street in lower Shaw for seven years, not that it should matter. Our building has a small patch of grass with no fencing. We’re really the only non-wrought iron fenced lawn on the block. We’re also the crappiest building on the block, but again, that shouldn’t matter. I’m writing because recently I’ve started politely asking people not to curb their dog on our lawn. I’m a tenant, it is private property and the many children in the building play on this space. Dogs are not permitted in the building so it’s not an issue with the tenants who share the property. I’ve encountered everything from “I’ve lived in this neighborhood for X years!!” to anger and people flinging curses at me to the weirdest “Go back to Norther Virginia (bleep bleep)!” I’m working with the landlord to put up those no-pooping signs, but in the meantime I just wanted to see if anyone out there in PoPville can tell me why my neighbors feel so entitled to let their dog feces be, even if temporarily, plotzed upon private property? Would it be okay if I curbed a dog on your fenced lawn even if I cleaned it up? I’m frustrated and pretty sure the next time someone reacts with anything but “Oh, no problem” I’m going to scream like a crazy person.

Dear PoPville,

A neighbor found a very sweet, well-behaved, housebroken, neutered male pitbull in the middle of East Capitol St. at 14th St. early this morning. David James is walking around the neighborhood and parks to see if anyone recognizes the pup. He took him to the area vets this morning, but no one recognized him, and he is chipped, but it was never activated. The vet figured he was around a year old. David’s landlord is insisting that the dog be out of his apartment by the end of the day today. David’s contact info is 202-489-1107, and his email is DJLantz(at)me.com. I am emailing for him because he is continuing to wander the streets looking for the dog’s owners. Can you please post his picture to see if anyone recognizes, or is willing to take this guy in? He seems like a great dog.

I actually have an update from David as of a few minutes ago. He checked back in with the Humane Society, who said a man came in asking for a dog matching the pup’s description, The guy refused to leave his name or information, and the person at the shelter said they would have hesitated to turn the dog over, even if he had been there. So, David is now looking for someone who might be willing to adopt this good boy.

Dear PoPville,

Someone in the middle of the block between 14th and 15th put out open rat poison dipped in peanut butter in their backyard. These yards are only 13ft wide and already the rats have carried it beyond the drop point. Two dogs in houses on either side have been poisoned in the last week – our small dog almost fatally. It’s an anticoagulant, and can be easily treatable if caught in time. Symptoms include dry, hacking cough lack of appetite and lethargy, and unstoppable bleeding from even minor cuts or abrasions. If your dog shows any of these symptoms get them to a vet immediately. We believe the poison was left out in the back yard, so houses with pets in the middle of the blocks on T Street and Swann St NW that share the common alley should be extremely careful.

Adrian is a dog owner who lives in Shaw.

Attention dog owners and dog lovers – spring is here. On a few occasions, the weather has already warmed up enough to do some outdoor dining and imbibing. That was the case last weekend, so naturally I was excited to have my dog (@DogNamedBatman) accompany my friends and I for an afternoon at Standard only to learn that dogs have to stay outside the fence. Some may prefer the dog-free atmosphere, but there are a lot of dog owners in the city who probably don’t mind dogs hanging out at the bar with them.

I did some research, including collecting feedback from dog listserves and dog owners to start this list. I will note that I was not able to personally confirm all of these details, and some of the information may be outdated. So if you know of any spots that have not been listed here please add them to the comments.

maddie

Dear PoPville,

Maddie is an 11-week old puppy who escaped from her foster home in Anacostia yesterday and we’re still searching for her. She is a City Dogs Rescue foster puppy.

Maddie snuck out under her foster family’s backyard fence at 15th and U St SE at 4pm yesterday. She is a sweet puppy, and wouldn’t hurt a fly, but she is most likely pretty scared so nobody should chase her. Her most prominent markings are the white star on her nose and white on her neck and belly. She has a black nylon collar on.

If anyone spots her or hears anything, please call (703)350-9630.
