In an article titled, D.C. Church Avoids Paying Taxes on Vacant Properties, ABC 7 says:

“A D.C. church is under fire for its efforts to avoid paying taxes. Now, some residents in the District’s Shaw neighborhood are calling the Shiloh Baptist church downright shady.”

Then the quoted woman who says:

“It’s sheisty is what it is,” said Danielle Boudreaux, a D.C. resident. “It is sheisty — it doesn’t go along with what I think the core values of a church should be.”

It’s actually the reporter who calls the practice “Shady”. I’m just saying…

Anyway, I hope they do have to pay higher taxes for these properties but I also think ABC really overdid the “Shady” bit (you have to watch the video to see what I mean).

A reader writes:

“I have a question about the “work in progress” on the northeast corner of 12th and S NW. There was a lot of activity rebuilding the house for a period of time but it has not sat abandoned for months. Even the fence has fallen down. What’s going on with this property? It looked like it was close to being finished.”

Sadly, when I went over there this weekend to snap the photos there was not a soul around to ask. From this photo:

It certainly looks like they were going to be condos. And it does look super close to being finished. I wonder if the developer ran out of money. Anyone know the scoop here?

Lots of folks have been anticipating the opening of Cafe Salsa located at 1712 14th Street (near Cork). As of March 20th they are officially open. At the moment only the first floor is open. However, I was able to take a tour of the second floor which should open shortly. I think they did a really good job. The space is huge. Here’s what the first floor looks like:

There’s a nice bar:

A couple of patrons were kind enough to let me photograph a couple of the items they ordered.

Empanadas

Papitas (stuffed with potato and Cuban beef)

Here’s a little description of the place:

In the front of the second floor they have a little lounge area called the Mojito Lounge.

Continues after the jump. (more…)

This condo is located at 1314 W Street, NW:

The flier says:

“NEW PRICE on this 1900’s row house, totally gutted and rebuilt into 5 condos. 2floor unit, back of building with 2 balconies, PARKING SPACE in rear, granite, stainless appl. package, flat screened hd tv, washer/dryer stack, kitchen bar with three stools. Access living/kitchen from 3rd fl & bedrooms from top floor or spiral staircase in unit. Condo fee $211 mo includes water. Walk to METRO.”

More info and photos found here.

Well, I definitely think this is a great location. The price was originally $419,900 but has now dropped to $389,900. Does this sound reasonable for a 2 bedroom 1.5 bathroom at this location?

This is a very cool building at 1333 14th Street, NW (not far too far south from P Street). Looks like it might have been a firehouse or some other municipal building back in the day.  I was able to ask one of the construction workers what the building would become. He said it is going to become office space likely with a tenant that does IT services or something like that.

La Villa is located at 1317 14th Street, NW in the Logan Circle neighborhood. I’m always intrigued by these places that look a little scrappy on the outside. Since we have many “pollo” experts here – what’s the verdict? Do you recommend eating in or takeout? Any specialties?

This section of 9th Street seems to have a bunch of new places going in. I should ask – does anyone know the difference between Ethiopean and Eritrean food? I’m guessing Eritrean has more seafood dishes? A few store fronts up from 2010 9th Street there is another spot that will be a restaurant according to the DCRA permit. I say the more options to hit before a concert at the 9:30 club the better!
