“Dear PoP,

I spotted a great temporary transom make of harvest materials on 8th Street NW between O and N on a small house next to the church.

it’s a great block architecturally speaking and the fruity transom is great!”

This is a great one! I think they had a similar display last year as well. This is probably my favorite non stained glass transom in town.

TBD’s Sommer Mathis has the scoop on the Dec. 15th opening date after attending the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board meeting this afternoon. She writes:

“A status hearing was held today on the club’s license, which was suspended indefinitely after five of the club’s employees were arrested for assault in relation to a man’s death outside of the club in October.”

We last spoke about the case on Nov. 1st, we spoke about the vigil here and here and spoke about the original incident here and here on Oct. 15th.

Do you think it makes sense that the club is allowed to reopen before the autopsy report is issued?

DC9 is located at 1940 9th Street NW.

“Dear PoP,

On Q St off of New Jersey, I was awakened today at 7AM. There were cops surrounding the ally behind Kipp Will Charter telling someone to come out with their hands up. It is now 9AM and Q St and P St blocked off . I heard that there are three armed men in one of the houses on Q street. It looks like warzone here. They are telling everyone to stay inside.”

MPD alert says:

“Police activity in the 400 block of Q Street NW, street closures is on New Jersey Avenue from R Street to P Street NW. Please use alternate streets.”

The Craigslist ad says:

“This recently renovated and newly updated row house has it all. The house features a well-furnished roof top terrace complete with a private sun room, a SkyDeck, and plenty of outdoor deck space for entertaining guests. The ground level has an extensive backyard reminiscent of Thailand or Brazil with dark hardwood decking, a hot tub, and tropical plantings.

This 2 Bedroom / 2 Bath features hardwood floors throughout, 2 wood burning fireplaces, kitchen with stainless appliances and an almost endless list of high end finishes and custom touches. Stealth Acoustics invisible audio system throughout the house accompanies the massive walk-in closet, double shower head master bath and other enviable amenities.

$2,900/month with partially furnished option. Short-term leases and pets welcome. Off-street residential parking available.”

I’m curious what you think about the price for this 2 bedroom in light of yesterday’s 2 bedroom rental discussion in Bloomingdale.

Does $2,900 sound right for this one?

Last Friday I had the opportunity to chat with American Ice Company’s general manager and partner Joe Reza (The Hilton Brothers most recently of Marvin and Gibson fame are also partners). Well, I’ve been known to get excited about some planned bars and/or restaurants. I’ll admit it, this place has made me giddy – it looks freaking awesome! Period. And it’s not even done yet. But before you get lost in all the photos I’m about to post, let me share a few details – firstly and most importantly – they plan opening up Dec. 15th.

Second, there will be all sorts of bbq options but as Joe explained, this is a bar that serves bbq not a restaurant that also serves drinks (there will be no host/hostess etc). There will be six beers on tap and 10 to 12 offered in cans (as well as a proper bar). Some of the beers to be offered include Stella, Bud, Czechvar, Belhaven, 21st amendment, Guinness, PBR, Dale’s, Old Speckled Hen and more.

Honestly, all you have to do is look at the pictures to see how sweet this place is gonna be. Obviously there was some construction still going on but you’ll be able to get a good idea of what it’ll look like. Mark this as a huge win for the U Street neighborhood.

American Ice Company is located at 917 V St, NW.

Tons of photos of the inside after the jump. (more…)

“Dear PoP,

You promised to give us periodic updates on the O St. Mkt and the Howard Theater. While it seems that the Howard renovation is moving along nicely, nothing has been touched at the O St. Market. What gives?”

Update on O Street Market – Ain’t shit happening.

Related update on Kelsey Gardens across the street – Ain’t shit happening.

Stay tuned for more updates when(ever) construction starts.

I’m embarrassed to say I forget the name of the lounge (it used to be called Nafka Restaurant ) located at 2010 9th St, NW near the 9:30 club but it has closed.

Further south on 9th St, it looks like a new gallery has opened up. Perhaps it’s just new to me but I never noticed it before the banner pictured below went up at 1306 9th St. NW. According their Web site, Zeki Gallery and Studio is run by:

“Zeki Findikoglu was born in 1946 in Iznik, Turkey. He lived in virtually every region of the Anatolian Peninsula. The rich variety of cultural and artistic traditions in Turkey developed into a lifelong interest. Zeki moved to the United States in 1973.

A professional artist since 1970 and an art professor since 1977, Zeki has gained international acclaim. His highly stylized paintings and prints incorporate Turkish culture and artistic contentions, extending them with a modern artistic vocabulary to provide a bridge between ancient and contemporary art. Zeki’s works have been exhibited in the US and Turkey, as well as Europe and Asia.”

Anyone ever check out the studio?

I’ve always thought this house at 1715 11th St, NW had the potential to be seriously sweet. I was psyched to see a permit had finally been placed on the door to start renovations. I’ll be sure to follow up with photos as progress takes place. It’ll be fun to look at before and after photos.

And of course I’ll be sure to post if it goes on the market so we can see how the inside turns out.

The flier says:

“$100K Price Drop! A Real Duplex! Front 2Br/1Ba bilevel unit has great income stream. Rear owner’s 1BR/1.5BA unit is a bit of New Orleans with side entrance, wonderful garden, almost new Kit w/ exotic granite, s/s appls Upper master ste has almost new double vanity sink with marble top and porcelain undomount sink, tiled shower. Expanded yr round sunrm on main and enclosed porch up”

You can find more info here and photos here.

This is certainly an interesting set up. You think it would be ridiculously expensive to combine the units into one home? I’m def. digging the garden. Does $889,000 sound reasonable or is it gonna need another price drop?
