“Dear PoPville,

Coming home from work last night, I saw this huge sign in my neighbor’s yard and nearly had a heart attack.

These two-story row houses on our street are all over 100 years old and lovingly cared for by our neighbors. We know the owners of 913 Quincy St, NW and they’ve lived here for about 10 years– none of us knew that they were going to cash out and sell their house to developers. In fact, the house was never even on the market.

The first thing I did was email my neighbors, who were equally shocked. Then I emailed the owners and asked what was going on. Their response was priceless:

No, we’re not moving and the big sign announcing 4 sparkling new condos is just as big of a surprise for us. Looks like this developer did not proofread the work order for the sign they had made. I think it’s meant for a site on 913 Quincy Street NE.

I’ve left two voicemails on the number listed for someone to rectify this and so far no response.

It turns out that our worst nightmare was… only a nightmare”

On Kansas Ave around the corner from the YES! Organic Market. Peaches not ready yet, but very cool when they are! Assuming this is a peach tree of course…then it’d be awesome in a whole different way :)

“Dear PoPville,

Today a man came to my front door in gym clothes and he looked pretty sweaty. He said he was a neighbor of mine and gave an apartment number but didn’t say the building. He said that he was locked out and needed to pay the locksmith but didn’t have access to his wallet. He said he had money and he would pay me back, he just didn’t have access to it since he was locked out.
He said he called his pastor and the pastor wasn’t able to help him. Whenever someone mentions the church or a pastor when they’re asking for money it makes me suspicious… Like they are trying to come off as legitimate.

I didn’t give him any money, but told him he could talk to the construction workers next-door to see if they could help him out. He said he didn’t want to deal with those guys and was going to ask a different neighbor.

Part of me felt bad because he did not seem to be full of malice, and he was really sweaty because it was hot outside. However, in the back of my mind I thought that surely a locksmith company would let him pay after they let him in and he did get to his wallet. Also, if he really needed the money he would have not minded asking other people on the block.

Has anyone dealt with this before in the Petworth neighborhood recently? I feel terrible if there really was a neighbor and distress that I didn’t help, but it seems to be wiser to be suspicious of anyone who comes to the door asking for money these days.”

Unfortunately I’m going with 99% likelihood it was a scam.

709 Kennedy Street, NW

Culture Coffee opened up back in Nov. of last year. A great score for that former coffee desert. Now they’ve applied for a liquor license too (I think Qualia and Filter might be the last coffee shops left without liquor licenses…)

The liquor license placard also has one of the funnier typos I’ve seen:

“Coffee Shop that serves sandwiches, pastries, snakes. Entertainment Endorsement/Cover Charge, Open Music, Poetry, Book Readings. Occupancy load 15.”

Hours of operation are listed as Sunday: 10am – 5pm, Monday through Friday: 7am – 10pm, Saturday: 8am – 10pm.

14th and Quincy St, NW (next to Red Derby)

UPDATE: Kevin from Lyman’s now says that the Post “jumped the gun” a bit and is not opening at 11am today. Should be soon though. Will update when I hear directly from Kevin. Sorry about the false excitement. If all goes with a few minor details they could be open by 5pm today.

Update: Opened at 630pm!

We took a sneak peek of the sweet space exactly a month ago. The wait ends today soon! Washington Post reports:

“Lyman’s Tavern opens for business at 11 a.m. Monday.

It’s a one-room saloon with half a dozen draft beers, four pinball machines, a killer jukebox and free popcorn fresh from a popper behind the bar.”

A couple weeks ago Lyman’s teased us with a shot of their pinball machines on Facebook:

While Red Derby has set the bar extremely high for great neighborhood spots, it looks like Lyman’s will be an exceptionally worthy neighbor – can’t wait to finally see for myself!

1125 Spring Road, NW

Thanks to all who sent emails about the future of the old Hebrew Home on Spring Road:

“Please find below an invitation to voice your input directly to D.C. government officials regarding the proposal from D.C. General Services and D.C. Housing Authority to renovate the former Hebrew Home (1125 Spring Rd NW – large vacant historic building on Spring Street between 10th and 13th Streets. Next to Raymond Recreation Center and Education Campus) into 80-90 affordable/workforce housing units. Commissioner Galloway (Ward4C06) has arranged this meeting for the community to ensure all of us most directly impacted by this development can voice our suggestions, concerns, etc… directly to those considering a way forward (Thanks Commissioner Galloway!).

At the May 14th ANC Ward 4C meeting it was emphasized that the proposal is still in the very early phases, and thus our input could absolutely make a difference in the direction of the project. Some community members voiced concern that the original proposal of converting the building into senior housing was no longer on the table to which the D.C. General Services representative offered that it doesn’t necessarily have to be off the table. The point being that it’s a great time to give your thoughts on how D.C. should move forward with this property. I hope you can join. Please share with others who will be impacted by this development.”

Other readers send:

“Residents are invited to meet with representatives from the District’s Department of General Services and DC Housing Authority to discuss the development of the properties (The Hebrew Home for the Aged and the Child and Family Services Agency) located at 1125 Spring Road, N.W.

Options are senior housing, mixed-use development, affordable housing, Veterans housing.

Come out and express your concerns.

Meeting Location:
Petworth Library 4200 Kansas Ave. NW Washington, DC 20011
Date / Time: June 17, 2014 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm

Vann-Di M. Galloway, DTM
Commissioner, Single Member District 4C06″
