1208 H Street, NE

Dear PoPville,

I’ve been out on H Street the last couple weekends this month and noticed Souk is still closed. I remember you posted in November that they are renovating for 2-3 months, but it’s way beyond that now.

Do you know if they went out of business? I always liked the food there and would be sad hear they closed. Plus, I have a deal I’ve been meaning to use that expires this summer.

Their phone is disconnected, their website is down and their last facebook message says:

“Good news!!! Souk Restaurant will be reopening again on Monday, September 5th 2011! Wind up your labor day weekend with us!”

The last few times I’ve walked by I haven’t seen construction/renovations going on. Anyone hear anything?

Whenever I ask friends about the Hopscotch Bridge connecting North Capitol to H Street I get love it or hate it answers. I fall under the love it category. What do you guys think – love it or hate it?

Dear PoPville,

Thought you might be interested in this house now being built on 14th PL NE near H street/Capitol Hill. Slightly different than your usual “Pop Up” posts. The original 2 story house on this plot burned over 30 years ago. For many years this was an empty plot of land that a few neighbors used as a community garden. Last year the city sold it to a developer who despite ANC opposition was able to get a permit to rebuild a house to include a cellar, 3 stories and a rooftop deck. The developer’s plan is to break it up into 2 units. The neighborhood opposition was around the height since all the other properties on this block are only 2 stories high.

This is a curious development – a new liquor license application has been posted outside 1423 H Street, NE – it says:

The Elroy (This is a transfer from 645 New York Avenue, NW. New York Avenue Beach Bar)

New Tavern. Beach themed Outdoors. Entertainment to be provided by DJ. No Nude Performances. Licensed Food Trucks will provide sale of food on premises; food prepared off-site and warmed on-premises. Total Load is 100; Total Number of seats is 40.

Obviously this is a storefront so they won’t be able to replicate the New York Ave Beach Bar here. So it sounds like a new bar called The Elroy will be using their liquor license. Looks like a lot of work is needed on the space so updates as construction progresses.
