We’ve been closely monitoring the progress of construction for the Ben’s Chili Bowl coming to 10th and H Street, NE. Thanks to a reader for sending this update shot, noting it looks like there will be a roof deck. Sweet.
H Street NE
From DC Streetcar:
“Beginning today, the District Department of Public Works (DPW) will begin ticketing and/or towing vehicles along H Street and Benning Road NE that are parked in such a way as to impede the path of the streetcar, including cars parked outside of the white lines and illegally double-parked vehicles. The District’s streetcar vehicles are scheduled to return permanently to the corridor this month for additional testing before passenger service begins.
The fine for vehicles blocking the path of the streetcar will be $100. At DPW’s discretion, vehicles may also be towed to clear the streetcar’s path and then relocated within the immediate neighborhood. Ticketing will be an ongoing occurrence along the corridor and is not expected to cease.
The DC Streetcar Team has been issuing “warning tickets” to vehicles on H/Benning that are improperly parked, prior to actual enforcement. Outreach will continue in order to spread the word that DPW is now ticketing and to educate motorists about proper parking along the streetcar corridor.”

It’s been a long time since we’ve heard about the Souk space which closed in Nov. 2012. Renovations starting were reported back in Sept. 2013 and now their facebook page says:
“The Atlas District welcomes Chef J. Scott Webster and his newest venture, Kitty’s Saloon! Come enjoy some southern inspired Contemporary Redneck Cuisine. Coming Summer 2014!!”
Their website says:
“The Atlas District welcomes Chef J. Scott Webster to the neighborhood! With 10 years experience as the executive Chef for Clyde’s Group and a history with Marcel Desaulniers at the Trellis Restaurant, he is finally ready to break the mold.

Kitty’s is located right between the Queen Vic and Vendetta. Updates when they get closer to opening.

Ed. Note: I admit I had to have OP explain it to me…”Just everybody streaming by the house here (I live nearby) is now sporting a beard and a tattoo, is my guess. And I mean everybody. Do you think this is unique to H Street or is it a city wide, or Nationwide, trend? I guess we may get our clue from the J Crew catalog perhaps? The corporatizing of hipsterdom perhaps?”

“Granville Moore’s Professional Intoxicator, Matt LeBarron, is curating a summer-long beer tasting series every Tuesday night at the upstairs bar, starting on Tuesday, July 8th. Designed more for entry-level craft beer drinkers, or those new to the Belgian craft scene, participants will have the chance to explore several different beers each week in an intimate and relaxed setting.
Over the course of eight weeks, Matt will explore different breweries and styles of beer at the upstairs bar. Since space is limited, each week will include two one-hour sessions at 6:30pm and 8:30pm for up to eight people per session. Classes cost $25 per person, including tax and gratuity, which covers tastes of four beers from that week’s theme paired with snacks from Granville’s kitchen. Reservations are required and can be made online.

Back in Feb. 2013 we learned that this would become a new development by the Fisher Brothers:
“701 2nd Street, NE is a 10-story, 398,103 square foot building comprised of 377 apartments on the ground to 10th floor, approximately 20,000 square feet of retail space located along H, 2nd, and G Streets, and 309 parking spaces located on two floors below-grade.
The location of the development offers more convenient access to mass transit than any other luxury multifamily project in Washington, DC with covered access via an entrance across 2nd Street to Union Station, allowing access to every major mass transit provider in Washington, DC (Amtrak, Metro, VRE and MARC). There is slated more than 210,000 square feet of high end retail space, including more than 100 specialty shops and 50,000 square feet of restaurant space.”
