Good news for sports fans on the eastern end of H Street. I stopped in 6th and H Bar and Grill and was told they’ll be opening in April. The space was completely photo ready but I can tell you it is dominated by huge bar with tons of tvs every foot or so spanning the entire wall. There was also lots of soccer regalia and other sports memorabilia. Frankly it looks like a perfect sports bar – stay tuned for an exact opening date.

Thanks to all who sent links to the Post’s Transportation chief asks if troubled District streetcar system can be saved:

[DDOT head Leif] “Dormsjo says streetcar backers have lacked “orderly thinking” about a program that was pieced together under three previous mayors without the needed discipline, data or strategy. Now, he says, he’s wrestling with basic questions so he can come up with his best advice for his boss and other city leaders. Among them: Can the city provide safe and reliable service on the 2.2-mile line that has been built on H Street and Benning Road NE? If yes, and the system opens, should it be expanded? If it is to grow, where should it go next?”

From Star & Shamrock:

“The Star and Shamrock is less than one week away from kicking off its first-ever, month-long Spring Shenanigans Simcha Festival, launching this coming Wednesday, March 4th, the first night of the Jewish holiday, Purim. Dubbed by the deli/tavern as “the Jewish St. Patrick’s Day”, this particular Jewish holiday is famously celebrated by being drunk on happiness, with the help of lots of good alcohol. In fact, the Talmud even instructs Jewish people to celebrate the holiday as “yemei mishteh v’simchah, days of drinking and rejoicing” (Esther 9:22). With guidelines like that, this is clearly a holiday for people of all faiths. Staying true to its Irish-Jewish namesake, Star and Shamrock is setting course to mark this “Jewish St. Patrick’s Day” with a Purim Party packed with as much revelry as its upcoming Irish one.

The festivities will begin at 7:00 pm on the evening of 4th, featuring a wide-range of menu specials, drink specials, live entertainment, and even a costume contest, throughout the course of the evening. Given the drinking-centric nature of the holiday, the event will be held in partnership with the popular Shmaltz Brewing Company, whose brewing industry celebrity founder, Jeremy Cowan, will be onsite for a He’Brew “Tap Takeover”. In the beginning of the month we learned Pizza Parts & Service had closed at 1320 H St, NE. After some false rumors I’ve learned who’s taking over the space! On the first floor a new restaurant is coming from Sam Adkins:

“Sam will be the head chef, seconded by Mandy Rosenfelt (formerly of the Breslin in NYC and The Welk in Westport, CT). Some might recognize Sam from New Heights, Cashion’s, Jackie’s, or William Jeffrey’s.”

I’m told the menu will feature seasonal and local products and be “honest and interesting. Also – coffee and ice cream!”

And what makes this even more interesting:

“The second floor will house a small retail showroom curated by Erik Bruner-Yang’s wife (of Toki Underground, Maketto), Seda Nak, and Aphra Adkins (Sam Adkins’ wife). The space will be available for pop-ups and other events, with a roof deck in the works for the future.”

The goal is for an early June opening. Updates as construction progresses.
