“Dear PoPville,

This morning at about 8:35 i was walking to the bus stop and saw a little white dog eating some garbage in my block, and I didnt recognize him as any of my neighbors dogs so I assume he is lost. “He” (couldve been a she) had a collar on but I couldnt tell if it had tags. I tried to coax him over but he spooked and ran away. I saw him on the 1400 block of Parkwood place running towards 14th street (by the Exxon station). He was small to medium, white, shaggy, about 20 pounds I’d guess. Looked like his collar was blue or purple. Very timid- took off running when i took one step towards him.”

From the Columbia Heights Community Marketplace:

“The market may be closed for the season, but we’re not done yet! Our holiday fundraiser is in full swing, and your donation can help make sure low-income families in Columbia Heights can put healthy, local food on their tables.

Give Today!

Need another reason to give? We’re super excited to debut our brand new t-shirts, and we’re giving them away as a thank you gift for all donations of $50 or more!

1 in 5 Columbia Heights residents receive food stamps, and 100% of your donation will go to our farmers market matching funds program that helps these low-income families buy more healthy fruits and vegetables. The idea is simple, we double the amount they spend up to $10:

$5 in food stamps = $10 in fruits and vegetables

$10 in food stamps = $20 in fruits and vegetables

Thanks to the support of customers and neighbors like you, in 2014 we helped more low-income families than any other farmers market in Washington, DC. But with more families depending on us than ever before to put healthy, local food on the table, we need your continued support to make sure we can serve them in 2015.

Even if you can only give a little this holiday season, please donate today.”

“Dear PoPville,

The Giant on Park Road has been without power for several hours. They are open, but have barricaded all frozen, dairy, meat, chilled veggies and fruits and are pulling them from the shelves as we speak. The registers are working and you can buy anything that doesn’t require refrigeration.”

Update from @waynemancomedy”

“@PoPville – Giant on 14 St NW took a power hit. They removed all meat, and nothing refrigerated is available.”

Thanks to all who sent emails about the action in the former Tasti D Lite space which has been vacant since August 2012. A permit in the window says it will be a Deli and Coffee Shop from Zombie Coffee.  Interestingly I know FroZenYo has a partnership withZombie Coffee. Of course a FroZenYo is already located nearby in the Columbia Heights Plaza. So it’ll be interesting to see how this turns out. Stay tuned.

“Dear PoPville,

I noticed this new graffiti on my neighbors’ building this morning, cattycorner from Cardozo High School. It’s also on a few other buildings around the block, but this one is disturbing because someone clearly got to the fire escape to do it, right outside the residents’ windows. I don’t know who did it, and I don’t mean to accuse Cardozo students, this is just located across the street from the school. Whoever the were, they’re jerks.”

Agreed.

Yesterday’s scuttlebutt about The Heights being sold has been confirmed. From a press release:

“The Heights, Columbia Heights’ neighborhood restaurant, is set to change owners by the start of 2015, with the concept to remain intact. Having gone under contract earlier this week to local restaurateur Ammar Daoud, the deal will transpire once license transfers are complete. Daoud, who has over 20 years of experience operating casual dining brands in the U.S. and internationally, plans to keep the restaurant operational as the neighborhood-centric place it has been for the past seven years, with all staff remaining.

The Heights is currently under the ownership of EatWell DC, which owns and operates four other neighborhood restaurant concepts: The Pig, Logan Tavern, Commissary and Grillfish. Upon completion of the contract’s transfers, EatWell DC will focus on these restaurants as well as explore future endeavors within Washington, D.C. A priority remains growing its produce farm, EatWell Natural Farm, located in La Plata, Maryland.

The Heights’ eclectic American fare and emphasis on locally sourced, fresh ingredients and craft beer and cocktails will continue, but Daoud’s vision does include a menu update in the future and to create a more alfresco dining experience. The Heights will continue to honor EatWell gift certificates through March 31, 2015, and this year’s New Year’s Eve offerings will remain as previously publicized.”
