“Dear PoPville,

Was biking on 11th Street NW this morning and there was a man standing in the middle of the street (in front of The Coupe) on the yellow lines, covered in gasoline, with a laundry detergent bottle, full of gasoline, trying to start a lighter at his chest. I slowly biked past him and stopped at the next corner to observe because something clearly wasn’t right. The gasoline smell was strong, even on the opposite end of the block. He walked to the sidewalk and was pacing around, in and out of the street, in front of The Coupe, then had an interaction with the employees there, and abandoned his bottle on the sidewalk and started heading south. I called 911 and then went to talk with the employees, who had offered help to the man (he refused and was looking for a lighter) and also had called the police. (more…)

11th and Columbia Road, NW from Rachel

Rachel and many others wrote around 9:30pm:

“Just heard gunshots here in Columbia Heights. Sounded like 6 or 7 shots?”

From MPD:

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting in the 3000 block of 11th Street NW. An adult male has been transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries to the hand and leg.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

11th and Park Road, NW

The following letter was also sent to Mayor Bowser.

“We are writing you on behalf of a concerned group of residents in North Columbia Heights regarding the WMATA owned property at 11th and Park Road. It is our understanding that the District of Columbia has offered $2.1 million for the parcel to preserve it as a dog park but that WMATA must by law take the highest bid. If the city’s offer is not the highest bidder then a private owner will close the park and develop the property. In that case, we have heard that there is a push to turn the Triangle Park at Sherman Avenue and Park Road into a dog park. We would like to explain why that would be a bad idea and suggest a better alternative.

The Triangle Park as currently configured is one of the last multi-use green spaces left near an 11th and Park neighborhood that will see an additional 60+ condominiums added in the next several years within three blocks. Several hundred apartments and condominiums will be added within an eighth of a mile on Georgia Avenue in the same time frame. Residents regularly utilize the Triangle Park green space for church events, yoga, children’s play space, neighborhood parties and leashed dog walking. It is a truly multi-use space for the entire community that is used on a daily basis by the entire community.

If this park is enclosed and becomes a dog park, all other alternative uses will effectively come to an end. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

in light of today’s post regarding the assault of the dog walker, I wanted to share what happened to my friend earlier this week, as they might be related.

Around 11 a.m. on Wednesday 1/16, while walking in Columbia Heights, my friend was pulled into an alleyway at the corner of Sherman Ave. and Irving St. NW by two male assailants, who covered her mouth and threatened to stab her if she did not keep quiet. The men were incredibly violent as they stole her bag and patted her down for any other possessions, ultimately pushing her down a set of cement basement stairs and breaking her leg. (more…)
