This is actually a metal carving that has been attached to back of the stop sign. That’s hardcore. I dig it the most. (It’s located on 18th Street in Adams Morgan.)

From DC Dude: “Bad news for all you San Marco fans. I spoke to the owner last night and he says he is retiring and selling the place. Saturday night will be their last night in operation. Better get yourselves down there for one last taste before the lights go out for good.”
Last chance to check out San Marco! Very sad news if this turns out to be true. Best of luck to the owner in retirement. Can anyone confirm the news?
UPDATE: Sadly, it is true. I just spoke with the owner who confirmed Sat. night will be the last service of San Marco. He did, however, mention that the reason why it took them so long to sell was because he wanted to make sure the spot remained a neighborhood restaurant. And that it will. It is set to become a Napalese Italian restaurant that will be remodeled and hopes to reopen in September. More news as it becomes available. But for those who love San Marco – send your best wishes in person or in the comments as the owner and his wife are heading for a well deserved retirement.
I’m saddened to write about another apparent day time shooting. From a reader:
“I woke up to the sound of a gunshot this morning right outside my apartment at 18th & Kalorama. I wasn’t entirely sure that it was a gunshot – in fact largely convinced myself I was mistaken – but then when I headed outside about a half hour later, I found the whole area crawling with police and criss-crossed with yellow tape. I was curious if you have any other info on what happened, or could find out for me. It is really disconcerting to see your home turf cordoned off as a serious crime area, especially in broad daylight.”
At 12:56pm a DC Alert message went out:
” MPD reports the following blocks closed for police investigation:
2200-2500 18th St. NW, 1600-1800 Columbia Rd. NW, 1700-1800 Belmont
Rd. NW; 1700-1800 Kalorama Rd NW.”
Anyone know if a suspect was apprehended?

I’m stumped.

Design Within Reach, located at 1838 Columbia Road in Adams Morgan is one cool shop. I spoke with sales associate, Omari, who described the store as featuring modern, mid century furniture. He also explained that the name means that the patron is able to have direct access to classic pieces. Previously, customers had to go through designers to purchase these types of pieces but Design Within Reach has a warehouse that stocks many of the pieces so that there aren’t long wait periods for your furniture to arrive. As you would expect prices vary but most sofas range from $1500-$5000. The pictures will say a lot more than anything I can write. Plenty of them after the jump. But let me just add that I couldn’t believe my eyes when I saw a terrarium on display. Well, another sales associate came up to me as I was admiring the terrarium and she told me it was actually for sale. Right on. So they also partner with Small World Terrariums and you can purchase some pretty cool terrariums. Very cool. Check out some photos of the furniture after the jump. (more…)
A lot of folks were interested in knowing when the next Patio Craft Sale would be. Well, it’s Saturday from 10-3 at 1801 Calvert St NW. Enjoy.

Wow, I can’t believe I’ve never heard of this place before. And Beige (AB) is located at 1781 Florida Ave in the same building as the Mint gym. It is owned by Darren Miller and Broderick Lee and has been open for a year and a half. I spoke briefly with Mr. Miller. They chose this location because “there weren’t too many home stores in Adams Morgan and it felt like a good place to land”. The name And Beige was “inspired by clean, simple, and classic lines of a neutral home interior. The reason we embrace neutral colors is simple. Everyday life renders full sensory overload. We look to neutrals in creating a naturally, calming, and relaxing home environment.” There are lots of great pieces in the store. The prices range from $10 for a candle to $10,000 for a one of a kind table. It is certainly worth checking out next time you are in Adams Morgan. Lots more photos of the interior after the jump. When I was walking through Adams Morgan on Sat. I entered the residential section of Calvert St. and noticed an impromptu sort of yard sale. But the goods were all hand designed by Gretchen Cook of Fiber Arts Design. She sells “hip, urban crafts, clothing and jewelry with a contemporary aesthetic”. Keep your eyes peeled next time you are walking down Calvert towards Woodley Park from Adams Morgan. Some more photos of her goods after the jump. (more…)

This is a tough spot to find if you’re not looking for it. Although it is located on a prominent spot at 2423 18th Street in Adams Morgan there is very little signage. It is located above the old record shop that has been closed for quite a while now. It is run by a very colorful proprietor named Mercedes Bien. She hesistated at many of the questions that I asked but that’s all good, I know I can be very provocative in spotlighted a shop or bar. Anyway, the store has been open for one and half years and came about after the Georgetown Flea Market closed. However, as the flea market is set to reopen in September, Ms. Bien will be moving back there so if you want to check out the store you should hurry. As the name suggests it is a vintage clothing store that features hand picked clothes for men and women (but it seems to focus on women’s items) plus some jewelry, sunglasses and hand bags. Check out some more photos after the jump to see if you dig the style. (more…)

Thanks to a reader for telling me about this work going on outside of Mama Ayesha’s. It looks like it is going to be phenomenal. I’ll be back when it’s fully completed. But consider this a sneak peek of sorts.
