More Movie Theater News – Union Market Getting One Too in 2015!!

Well this is incredibly awesome. On top of last week’s news of a new 10 screen theater coming to New York Avenue and N Street, NE between first and North Capitol from the folks behind E Street Cinema, comes this huge news from a press release:

“EDENS, one of the nation’s leading retail real estate owners and developers, announced today that they will partner with Reading International, Inc. to open an Angelika Film Center in EDENS growing Union Market district in 2015.

Today’s announcement about Angelika’s opening furthers EDENS’ commitment of investment in this district. The Angelika, which operates the leading dedicated arthouse in the US, opened a state-of-the-art cinema at Mosaic in Fairfax, VA in September 2012. Exhibiting a range of film and alternative programming, the Angelika has become an important part of the cultural community in Northern Virginia and metro D.C.

Reading International and EDENS have been working to create a unique Angelika Film Center venue that will combine cutting edge presentation technology with elements of luxury and comfort in a stylish ambience capturing the rich and creative spirit already apparent in the Union Market district. This multi-screen cinema will offer luxurious seating and pristine digital projection with immersive sound systems. In keeping with its other cinemas, the Angelika will strive to offer Washington, D.C. the most interesting quality programming available. And, in keeping with Union Market’s progressive food offerings, the Angelika will serve a food and drink menu designed by Food Network/Cooking Channel veterans, Bruce Seidel and Chef Santos Loo. New Movie Theater Coming to NoMa in 2016

So much incredibly good development news this week. Next up – new movie theater for NoMa! Thanks to all who sent emails and links. Urban Turf reports:

“The Landmark Theaters multiplex will be located in JBG’s Capitol Point project and is expected to open in the fall of 2016. The theater will occupy 31,000 square feet at the mixed-use project, and include a full-­‐service bar, luxury seats, reserved seat selection, and 3-D projection.”

The theater will have 10 screens and be located in the planned JBG project – Capitol Point to be located at New York Avenue and N Street, NE between first and North Capitol.

Landmark Theaters are the same folks who run the awesome E Street Cinema. This announcement marks word of the second big movie theater coming to town – a 16 screen movie theater is also planned for Navy Yard.

Final Outdoor Movie in Lamont Park on Friday – Best in Show

Union Market Continuing Outdoor “Drive-In” Movie Series – Have a Look at the Line Up

“This summer Union Market hosted Washington D.C.’s first drive-in movie experience on Friday evenings. The fall films will be tied to a particular theme and shown on Union Market’s 3-story wall. A variety of Union Market vendors will also participate, serving food, drinks and fun snacks.

The Union Market Drive-In is free to attend. There will be a secured picnic area on the parking lot for bikers and walkers. The Union Market Roadie will run a free shuttle between Union Market and the NoMa Metro Station for Drive-In attendees.

DCJCC to Offer Woody Allen Fest, Two Weeks of Double Features

In anticipation of the upcoming premier of Woody Allen’s latest film, Blue Jasmine, the Washington DCJCC is launching two weeks of nightly double features of the director’s movies along with trivia and a happy hour. Each night during the week of July 8-14, the DCJCC will be showing Annie Hall and Purple Rose of Cairo with a special Woody Allen-themed happy hour on July 11. During the second week, July 15-21, the DCJCC will play Manhattan and Crimes and Misdemeanor with a trivia night on July 18. The events will serve to celebrate the work of Woody Allen while allowing Washingtonians to escape the summer heat. The films shown will all be in 35 mm format. Tickets are $11.
