Well this is incredibly awesome. On top of last week’s news of a new 10 screen theater coming to New York Avenue and N Street, NE between first and North Capitol from the folks behind E Street Cinema, comes this huge news from a press release:

“EDENS, one of the nation’s leading retail real estate owners and developers, announced today that they will partner with Reading International, Inc. to open an Angelika Film Center in EDENS growing Union Market district in 2015.

Today’s announcement about Angelika’s opening furthers EDENS’ commitment of investment in this district. The Angelika, which operates the leading dedicated arthouse in the US, opened a state-of-the-art cinema at Mosaic in Fairfax, VA in September 2012. Exhibiting a range of film and alternative programming, the Angelika has become an important part of the cultural community in Northern Virginia and metro D.C.

Reading International and EDENS have been working to create a unique Angelika Film Center venue that will combine cutting edge presentation technology with elements of luxury and comfort in a stylish ambience capturing the rich and creative spirit already apparent in the Union Market district. This multi-screen cinema will offer luxurious seating and pristine digital projection with immersive sound systems. In keeping with its other cinemas, the Angelika will strive to offer Washington, D.C. the most interesting quality programming available. And, in keeping with Union Market’s progressive food offerings, the Angelika will serve a food and drink menu designed by Food Network/Cooking Channel veterans, Bruce Seidel and Chef Santos Loo. The Wharf: A Greenhouse Film from Southern Foodways on Vimeo.

From Southern Foodways Alliance:

Our latest Greenhouse Film, The Wharf, is a portrait of the Maine Avenue Fish Market in Washington, DC. Filmmakers Emily Hilliard and Ashley Melzer explain the history of the market and their motivation for making the film.

The Maine Avenue Fish Market, or The Wharf, as it’s referred to by most locals, is not a place you are likely to stumble upon. It’s tucked away under the I-395 overpass and sits on floating docks on DC’s southwest waterfront. It wasn’t always so hidden.”

From Screen on the Green:

“After countless rejections, a “difficult,” New York-based actor resorts to extreme measures to get work. Auditioning for women’s roles in a wig and heels, he/she finds soap opera success in a dress. Dustin Hoffman is a knockout (not in a pretty way) in the title role. He gets super support from Jessica Lange (an Oscar), Teri Garr (an Oscar nomination), Bill Murray and the director, Sydney Pollack, who plays a cynical agent. The A.F.I. puts “Tootsie” #2 on the list “Funniest Films of All Time,” just behind “Some Like It Hot.” (1982) 116 Min.

The free outdoor event will continue with screenings on Monday evenings at sunset through August 12 with movies shown on a giant 20’ by 40’ screen between 7th and 12th Streets on the National Mall.”

From Screen on the Green:

Years before she was Mrs. Lincoln, Sally Field rocked the rafters as Norma Rae. The character was based on a real-life heroine, a lowly, minimum-wage textile worker who took on the bosses at her North Carolina factory. Ron Leibman plays the union organizer, a Yankee from New York, who inspires her. Beau Bridges is her good-ole-boy husband. The former Flying Nun and Gidget rocked the rafters again when she picked up her first Best Actress Oscar. (1979) 110 Min.

The free outdoor event will continue with screenings on Monday evenings at sunset through August 12 with movies shown on a giant 20’ by 40’ screen between 7th and 12th Streets on the National Mall.
