Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Signage and building permits for a new restaurant, across the street from Nido.”

Back in 2013 RIA Insider posted:

“The theme of the restaurant will be “Food for Thought” and will feature American style cuisine, using local and fresh ingredients, that Nina describes as “healthy dining” with made from scratch foods…they are currently working on the menu, which will contain several signature dishes including gluten-free and vegetarian options.”

Updates when they get closer to opening.

A reader reports:

“They sent out menus to the neighborhood over a month ago, but the phone number on the menus redirects to the H St. location. Also, the space looks completely done (see attached). I don’t know what the holdup is and I’m sorta annoyed about it, because I could really go for a jumbo slice right now. Maybe they’re having trouble finding staff?”

From Nido:

“Things have progressed quickly and we are hoping for a late May opening.

The purchase of the space located at 2214 Rhode Island Avenue NE was completed on January 23rd by E&K Real LLC of which Erin Lingle and I [Karlos Leopold] are the only members. Since that time we have completed most of the renovation. Currently we are installing finishes (attached are some images). The space, designed entirely by Erin, features hand-painted tile, natural wood and white-washed brick for a bright and cheery atmosphere. We expect to accommodate seating for 85 and a total occupancy of 99. In order to fulfill part of our sustainability goals we have retained GeoStellar to install solar panels on our roof. The remaining roof elements we hope to convert into a green roof. Finally, in conjunction with DC Facades, we expect a full renovation of the facade to begin soon.

Most excitingly, the process of convening our management team has begun and as such we have hired Aaron Wright as our Executive Chef. Originally from Iowa, Chef Aaron cut his teeth on Italian cuisine in his hometown. Since his late teens, Chef Aaron, has felt a desire to plan and prepare seasonal menus. He brings to Nido a vast culinary experience drawn from his tenure at Butterfield 9, Pesce and The Tabard Inn. We welcome all to reach out to Chef Aaron to discuss his experience and culinary plans for Nido.

-Karlos, Erin and Aaron”
