Yesterday afternoon, I swear, seriously, I was just looking for a glass of water as I unwisely took the capital bikeshare from Petworth to Cleveland Park when it was 95 degrees out. By the time I stumbled down to Woodley Park, I thought I was hallucinating when I saw the sign above at the Hot N Juicy located at 2651 Connecticut Ave, NW. The guy who was working must’ve thought I was crazy. I asked is that just for Bud Light? He says no, all beers. I say when is the happy hour? He says all day. I asked three times because I couldn’t believe it. Then I walked over to the bar and saw Heniken and Shock Top and asked if they were $1 and the guy just starts laughing. Yes.

It’s true – I bought a Shock Top for $1 (screw my dehydration!). I don’t know how long this promotion will last but I think this may very well be the best deal in town.

On a completely unrelated note – on Mondays through Wednesdays, all day, I can now be found at 2651 Connecticut Ave, NW…

The old Pesto (and Mrs Simpsons) space at 2915 Connecticut Ave, NW has been replaced with the newly opened Lillies. Back in early May it appeared that some sorta coffee house serving Seattle’s Best coffee would be moving into the space (they’ll still offer Seattle’s Best but they are also fine tuning a proper espresso machine). Turns out to be much more extensive. I stopped in to the newly opened spot yesterday to grab some photos. The space is very casual/comfortable inside and as some reader have noted to me in emails – the outdoor patio is fantastic. They are still working on their web site so I’ll post some photos of the menu after the jump. In the next 3-4 weeks they will also offer beer and wine.

Photos of the inside and the menu after the jump. (more…)

$1790 sound right for this English basement?

From an email:

“Saturday is National Waitstaff Day and Open City in Woodley Park is celebrating by offering ALL current servers and such a 30% discount on their bill ALL DAY!”

Open City is located at 2331 Calvert Street NW. I think this is a really nice gesture but how they will verify is a bit of a mystery. You guys got like a secret handshake or something…?

For the servers out there – Happy Waitstaff Day!

I got a very tempting tweet saying:

“owner of steak&eggs in tenlytown is vying for a 2nd location in old rug store at intersection of connecticut and calvert by the bridges”

Osman & Joe’s Steak’n Egg Kitchen currently has a DC location in Tenleytown at 4700 Wisconsin Ave NW. You can see their menu here. When we discussed their murals back in Feb. ’10 there were a few fans.

The rug store that the tipster is referring to was Jamshid’s Antique and New Oriental Rugs located at 2313 Calvert St, NW which closed in March ’11. Another reader had heard that CVS would be moving into that space. But the mere fact that Steak’n Egg is looking for a 2nd location is good news. Do you think a 2nd location in the Woodley/Adams Morgan area would do well?

I’ll be sure to follow up on this particular location or whichever is ultimately chosen. Stay tuned. And pray that it is true!

I always thought it was odd that such a shlocky souvenir shop had such a prime retail space at 2625 Connecticut Ave. NW in Woodley Park. The reader notes: “I’m sure Panera is licking their chops!”

Think a Panera would be a good fit there?

“Dear PoP,

Have you heard any murmurs about the old Pesto Ristorante space on Connecticut, between Woodley Park and Connecticut? I constantly see people in there working on the space, but wasn’t sure if they had found a new tenant!”

Pesto, located at 2915 Connecticut Ave, NW, closed back in Sept. 10 (and before that was Mrs. Simpsons). I also noticed a bit of construction and a permit on the window a few weeks ago but I couldn’t tell then who was going in. But I think I finally have the answer – it looks like it’s going to be a coffee shop. Peering in the window I was able to make out a sign advertising Seattle’s Best Coffee.

Any fans of Seattle’s Best? Think they’ll be able to compete with Starbucks just up the block (3000 Connecticut Ave NW)?

Sorry for the bad photo but the sun wasn’t cooperating. Though if you squint a bit you can see a series of Seattle’s best coffee choices.

Thanks to a reader for sending word and photos. Back in May ’10 we learned that Sake Club had closed at 2635 Connecticut Ave, NW. There is a sign announcing a hearing for a Noodles & Company to occupy the space. You can see their menu here.

The reader writes succinctly, “that totally sucks”, what do you guys think – any fans of Noodles & Company?

And right next door at 2633 Connecticut Ave, NW the reader writes:

“Cafe International is closed. windows are covered in newspaper. didn’t love the place, but a nice alternative when open city is packed for a quick coffee.”

I’ll be sure to update when we find out who is moving into that space.
