Here is another nice photo (if I do say so myself) of new condos overshadowing old school row houses. The condo is the new PN Hoffman building on 14th St.

This house needs a lot of work but when you take a closer look you can really see what a gem it is. The details around the door and above the windows are exquisite. Check out the close ups after the jump. (more…)

Ever since Mr. Days went out of business in downtown DC I’ve been looking for a good sports bar. I have finally found one in Momo’s Cafe Nema at 1334 U St. NW. Momos opened about two months ago. While it certainly a bit more upscale than Mr. Days was it has a nice layout and obviously the location is great. It has tons of flat screens tvs throughout so you can’t have a bad seat. And for soccer fans on Sat. and Sun. mornings they will be showing plenty of games including the upcoming Africa’s Cup. Additionally the grub looks good and is reasonably priced. Burgers go for $6.99, Nachos $6.99, BBQ Wings 10/$6.99 20/$11.99 and lots more choices. On Friday and Sat. nights there will usually be a DJ spinning. For me, I think this place will be perfect to catch a game on Sat. afternoons and of course I’m always happy to discover a good sports bar that appreciates soccer. Anyone check it out yet? More pictures after the jump. (more…)

I stumbled upon 12th Place, NW which is one of those hidden little blocks around town. I felt like it could’ve been on a movie set. I’m aware there were no porches but it had a really nice, peaceful feel to it. Do you know of any hidden streets like this?

Wow, that was fast. Marvin the wildly successful new bar with the sweet outdoor space up top is set to expand. Thanks to an eagle eyed reader for tipping me off to the liquor licenses on the adjoining building next to Martin. You can see from the photo they will be expanding into the yellow structure. (Sorry for the quality of the photo but I only had my cell phone.) Obviously the space still needs a bit of work, so it is not clear when this addition will be open. From the liquor license it said the space will possibly have DJs and up to a five piece band. When I went into Marvin to inquire about the expansion they said that it will be part of Marvin but separate from the dining area. They wouldn’t/couldn’t go into detail about what the space will look like or when it will open. It’s not quite clear if it is going to be a totally separate space or connected in some way. I’m intrigued by the potential. What do you guys think? Too early to expand? Or is this just what the doctor ordered?

My prayers have been answered. Hallelujah. Hallelujah, that is one weird word to type out, but an apt one for how I am feeling. The Taco Bell/KFC has reopened on 14th Street just south of U Street. Thanks to a reader for alerting me. You will not be dissapointed when you go back. The basic layout is the same but the look is rather futuristic. It feels like at least 2009 in there now. The chairs are a nice silver and some of the walls are painted a nice shade of fire engine red. To top it off the staff now sport fresh new red shirts with sweet racing stripes down the arm. All in all a much cleaner feeling than before.
Now for the food. I started with a beef meximelt. At first I was very frightened because the meximelt was not on the menu but, remember this tip, just ask for one and they’ll make you one even though it’s not written on the menu. I had a fountain Dr. Pepper which nicely complimented the hot sauce on the meximelt. For the second course I had another meximelt. Why mess with perfection right? To top it all off I had a Nachos Supreme. It was perfect. The cheese to meat to beans to sour cream ratio was spectacular. It was as though an artist crafted this particular plate of nachos. Despite the fact that I felt rather ill a couple hours after consumption I still highly recommend you make the trip and don’t forget to ask for a meximelt.

Located at 1830 14th Street (located on the second floor) the Hunted House sells “vintage and modern furnishings”. The store is open Thurs and Fri: Noon – 7:00 PM and Sat and Sun: 11AM – 7:00 PM. Hunted House has been open for the past six months and has some pretty sweet furniture. This Swedish Teak Lounge Chair and Ottoman was going for $695. So if you’re looking to get me a Christmas gift you need look no further. Despite the fact that I really dislike the name of this business the goods for sale will make the trip well worth your while.

Cafe? Restaurant? Who’s got the scoop?

This is outside the new PN Hoffman building at 14th and V. This is what it looked like a couple of months ago. So why do you think they took the benches away?

Whah? 14U which I always thought was called FourteenU Coffee shop, located at the corner of 14th and U, is actually called one for U coffee shop which I guess makes more sense. But anyway I just noticed that they now offer Salsa lessons which just seems really bizarre to me. It is a very small space, but I guess that’s cool. Maybe next month they’ll have free bonsai tree sculpting lessons. I mean that would make just as much sense, no? Has anyone taken the Salsa lessons? I’m still nursing a nagging breakdancing injury but I’ll have to check it out when I’ve recovered…
