U Street Cafe, formerly Mocha Hut, located on U Street between 13th and 14th will have its grand opening Tuesday, May 26th. I had a chance to talk with some of the folks behind the new cafe and I think you’ll be pretty happy. One of the the VP for Operations, Elise, told me that waffles will continue to be offered! The menu will also be expanded. In addition to the waffles there will also be 4-5 fresh soups, quiches, salads, pulled pork sandwiches and more. If you really like the food there will be a grab and go option of freshly made sandwiches. Their bread will be provided by Firehook bakery and the bagels will be provided by Bethesda Bagel.

There will be plenty of coffee options as well as a bigger selection of loose teas. Their coffee roaster is Orinoca located in Columbia, MD. In addition to tea and coffee there will also be a limited selection of beer and wine.

Occupancy inside will be 50 while there will also be four tables located on the patio.

They will still be offering free wifi and the space will be children/family friendly.

Grand opening is Tuesday May 26th at 6:30 am. Regular hours will be 6:30am – 8pm Mon. – Thurs, 6:30 – 11pm Fri., 7am – 11pm Sat., and 8am – 9pm on Sun.

As many folks know these are the same folks opening up a spot in Columbia Heights on Irving Street. That space is slated to open in late July/early August.

I’ve been super curious about the building at the corner of 13th and W. It has been fenced up for a while but I’ve finally seen a for sale sign that now says under contract. I suppose it’s likely to become a bodega. It’ll be great to get that eyesore fixed up.

And it looks like you will soon be able to get your wine on for another hour in the near future. The petition says, from Mon.-Wed. they’ll be applying to stay open until 1am instead of 12am and from Thurs.-Sun. they’ll be staying open until 2am from 1am. Nice.

We last heard about Eatonville (across the street and from the owners of Busboys and Poets) when the space was being painted by artists back in March. Well, the place looks really close to opening. Sadly, there was some sort of meeting going on when I snapped the photos so I couldn’t ask exactly when. Also the guy who let me in to take the photos was on the phone. But you can tell from the photos that it’s gotta be really close.

Do you like the look? More photos after the jump. (more…)

I love markets. I can’t remember my friends’ kids’ names but I can remember that market day is Wednesday in Santa Cruz, Saturday in Portland (Oregon), Saturday in Uzès, France – Wednesday for the local/organic market – Thursday in Penn Quarter and Sunday in Isle-sur-la-Sorgue. So Saturday was a red-letter day for me, with two markets selling for the first time this year, both having grown significantly during their fallow season.

The Mt. Pleasant market is right around the corner from my house and its opening was like an old friend coming back from vacation looking better than ever. It’s also the one thing we have that’s better than what Columbia Heights has, so it’s especially nice to see it prosper. The ex-hipster family pack was checking out new addition Atwater Bakery — which sells the best sourdough East of East Bay and the best rye south of the Lower East Side, among many other offerings — while the kids ran rampant around the edge of the park. Other new arrivals attracting attention among the shopping-bag-and-stroller set were Groff’s Content Farm grass-fed lamb and beef, and pastured pork; ethical veal from Painted Hand; and Cherry Glen goat cheese (excellent stuff).

Just a couple of years ago, Mt. Pleasant was the Little Market that Could, now it’s great to see it hitting stride in a big way. And, don’t forget: strawberry season is coming.

Down at the corner of 14th and U, where strollers are rare and everyone seems a little hung-over, they’re still in the Little Market that Could phase, but they’re growing, too. Big new additions: The Copper Pot, where impressively-résuméd (Maestro is all you need to know) Stefano Frigero is selling prepared pastas and brutally elitist prepared sauces (roasted shallots and Barolo) and jams (concord grape with grappa); and equally impressively-résuméd Loic Feillet (Citronelle, CityZen) is churning out fresh bread for Panorama – his loaves are a little lighter and a bit more nuanced than Atwater, it all depends on your mood. Try the rustique.

Besides the food – and, in addition to the food tasting great, you start noticing that you’re eating the same stuff swank restaurants are bragging about on their menus — the best thing about the markets is getting to know your farmers. They always actually give a shit about what they do, and they love to talk about it and, before you know it, instead of buying from Truck Patch or Tree and Leaf, you’re buying from Bryan or from Zach and Georgia and they’re telling you what’s good and what’s coming in next week and saving you something special because you have a big dinner coming up. And, if you have any questions, Market Managers Rebbie Higgins at Mt. Pleasant (nine feet tall, fuschia hair) and Robin Schuster (not so tall, floppy hats) are indeed mistresses of their domains and know everything you need to know.

Remember – protest marches are fun, but farmer’s markets are the tastiest way to save the earth.

Almost a year ago it looked like the space at the old 14U coffee shop was going to become a boutique. Clearly that didn’t happen. Thanks to the wonderful world of twitter it looks like we may finally have an answer. Metrocurean’s twitter feed says:

“Philly cheese steak place is replacing 14U coffee shop at 1939 14th St. Owner says he’s aiming for July.”

I’ve emailed the owners but haven’t heard back yet. But of course Metrocurean is one of the most reliable food bloggers in the city, so I give this word a lot of weight.

Are you psyched about a “Philly cheese steak place”?

If people have been in withdrawal from Mocha Hut’s closing up at U Street between 13th and 14th, you are in for some relief soon.

I’m told U Street Cafe is planning on opening up May 14th!

And the owners are the same folks who will be opening up Tynan Coffee & Tea in Columbia Heights (next to Five Guys on Irving Street).

Tynan Coffee & Tea is looking to open up later this year in the Summer/Fall time frame. For more info on Tynan you can see the press release from Donatelli Development after the jump. (more…)

I’ve been hearing lots of folks talking about this lately. I went a few weeks ago at night (on a Thursday) and the wait wasn’t too bad at all. I mean Ben’s has always been crowded at times. But the last few weekends I have noticed that there have been huge lines snaking around the side during the day. I have never seen that before. So I have to pose the question – has Ben’s gotten too crowded to be a reliable dining/snacking option?

This house is located at 1814 Vermont Ave, NW:

The flier says:

“Close to Metro and U-Street/Logan, light-filled, condo alternative, updated kitchen, granite countertops, hard wood floors throughout, historic row house with beautifully landscaped front and back patios, two parking spots, custom elfa shelves & lots of great features.”

More info and photos here.

Now this is a small house at 2 beds/1.5 baths but before you judge it you have to take a look at the photos. They seems pretty sweet. Lots of nice detail here. Given the charm and the size do you think $530,000 sounds reasonable for this home?
