It was great fun looking at the changes in Columbia Heights from 2002 to today. Another kind reader, the Shah of Shaw, sent in some great photos of the U Street area from 2004. I have to say it’s equally wild. Above is a photo of the Beauregard building located at 11th and V Streets, NW. Here’s what the area looked like in 2004:

After the jump you can see what the PNHoffman building, Union Row, looked like on 14th and V from 2004. (more…)

The flier says:

“OPPORTUNITY! LOVELY, SUNNY SEMI-DETACHED BAY FRONT VICTORIAN: 3 BEDROOMS, 1 1/2 BATHS, FULL WALK OUT BASEMENT. HIGH CEILINGS, WOODEN FLOORS, LARGE DINING ROOM & EAT-IN KITCHEN WITH GARDEN VIEW. CEILING FANS AND WALL A/C UNITS. VERY PRETTY FRONT & REAR GARDENS & PATIO, PARKING OFF ALLEY. FULLY FENCED. “AS IS” SALE. SUPERB LOCATION NEAR U ST/LOGAN ON QUIET STREET 2 BLOCKS FROM METRO.”

More info found here and a virtual tour found here.

I really love the floors on the second floor here. I’m also a huge fan of the bay window on the first floor. The location is pretty tight as well. However, I’m always a little concerned by “As Is” sales, but it doesn’t look like it needs much work from the photos. Does $715,000 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/1.5 bath?

Back in July I wrote that Habitat was moving into the space next door, formerly Moojoo Ken located at 1512 U Street, NW.

But I had no idea what was going to move into Habitat’s old space at 1510 U Street, NW. A reader provides some salacious scuttlebutt:

“I was just in Habitat, the purse/ bag shop on U Street. It recently moved downstairs into Moojoo Ken’s old spot. I asked someone working there what was moving into their old spot and he said it would be a sex shop. He seemed to be an honest man, who struggled to find the appropriate English words to describe the shop to me.

While I often look at vacant spots on U Street and brainstorm what this area needs, sex shop has never been the top of my list. Guess I am a bit naive.”

Of course this is only scuttlebutt but I’m dying to hear what you guys think. So for the FQoTD – do you think a sex shop will be a good fit for U Street? Also, do you think the U Street neighborhood association (if there is one) will support or at least not fight a sex shop on U Street?

Back in June I shared some scuttlebutt that the owners of Marvin had purchased this location at 1115 U St, NW. Turns out to be partially true. The Going Out Gurus provide the details:

“The U Street Music Hall is slated to open in early 2010 in the old Cue Bar location at 1115 U Street — a basement-level space that can hold 250 to 300 people. Eastman says the place will have “a rock-club atmosphere with a high-end sound system. No bottle service or any of that.”

You can read the rest of the details here.

I’ve been curious to see the condos inside this building, the Langston Lofts. It is a pretty killer location. But what do you think of the condo itself? Does $389,998 sound reasonable for this 1 bed/1 bath?

There is also a 1 bed/1.5 bath for $452,900.

And a 2 bed/2.5 bath for $519,900.

Stem is located at 1412 U Street NW. Looks pretty cool.  They have men’s and women’s clothing, home furnishings and jewelry.  Anyone check it out yet? Thumbs up or down? Here are the hours in case you haven’t been yet:

sun-thu: 11am – 10pm
fri-sat: 11am – 11pm

This new construction is located at the corner of Georgia (just before it becomes 7th and newly christened Chuck Brown Way) and Florida Ave.

I’m not sure what’s going in but there’s seems to be a lot of space for some ground floor retail, I’ll keep my eye on this spot.

And in very late reporting, I just noticed the sign saying Cafe 1612 closed in early August. Cafe 1612 was located below the results Gym on U Street. I never actually ate there. Were there any fans? Any scuttlebutt on what may go into the space?

The great publication DC North has some great articles this month. But one that really jumped out at me was their scoop on the U Street Flea Market, located at 9th and U, development plans. They report:

“Per an application for Federal Low Income Housing Tax Credits filed with the District’s Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) in July, the Jazz will bring some 153,770 square feet of new apartments and retail to the current site of Shaw’s U Street Flea Market. In total, WMATA owns three separate properties between Seventh and Ninth streets on the north side of Florida Avenue, totaling nearly 29,000 square feet, above the Green Line tunnel linking the Howard-Shaw and U Street-Cardozo stations.”

Sadly, the online version doesn’t have a photo of the rendering so be sure to pick up a paper copy outside the metro for that.

This section of U Street is on fire. First we learned of Dickson Wine Bar coming to 903 U Street, then we recently learned about the the tavern coming to the corner of 9th and U with rumors of Marvin/Gibson involvement. And now this.

I suspect some folks may miss the Flea Market. Even though I almost got my ass kicked for taking photos there, I do kinda dig it and it does seem to be a popular spot. The DC North article also says that there will be “three public, open-air plazas along Eight Street, Ninth Street and Florida Avenue” so perhaps those plazas can absorb some of the market.

Dig the plans?
