UPDATE – More details from ANC 2B09 – Commissioner Noah Smith:

One or more armed robberies occurred near 14th St last night after 11pm. Police were chasing a suspect through the neighborhood on foot including on 15th Street and T Street and the surrounding alleys. Gunshots were exchanged in the chase. The suspect eventually died on Caroline St and the circumstances of the death are still under investigation.”

Eyewitness report from the scene last night:

“Craziness on 15th at nw between Swann and T tonight…At least 10 gunshots, I looked out the window because I thought a rock had hit our window. Two bicycle police had dropped their bikes and had drawn their guns facing down the alley on the other side of the street, looking toward 14th St. I assume they were exchanging gunfire with the suspects, although I don’t know who was firing. Crime scene tape now enclosed our street entirely” (more…)

Ed. Note: Before you reflexively say something negative please read the full description below. I know it goes against instinct but it can be done. Personally, I’d like to give a professional breakdancer for over 20 years the benefit of the doubt so let’s at least wait for them to open before judging. Obviously it won’t be for everyone and that’s ok. No need to poison the well just for fun.

If you are a huge Patty Boom Boom fan, I feel ya – take time to grieve – and revisit in a few months – also no need to reflexively trash the replacement. Here’s the link to the original story about the coming closure where you can lament the passing. I mean that genuinely.

I recognize my request may fail but I felt it needed to be said.

Cool I hate having to preface like that now here’s the owner’s vision for the coming Cloak & Dagger:

“So in a nut shell Cloak & Dagger’s concept will pay homage to DC’s history of elusive spies, espionage and underground secret society. A red telephone booth (London style sorta like the Dr. Who) will be the disguised entrance way into the bar/lounge. Covert rooms leading to different areas (I.e. the entrance, VIP room, DJ booth, etc) of Cloak & Dagger will provide a fun and classy Victorian style old school ambiance.

The 1st floor will be more of a speakeasy type of bar. A secret book shelf door will lead into this bar where it will be set up more as a mixology concept with seasonal drink menu specials.

2nd floor will more of the “club” where we will have the DJ’s set up for play to the crowd. The 3rd level mezzanine will be more for the bottle service crowd who prefer to keep it more chill with their group of friends.

Weekly events will depend on the nights. I’ve been a professional breakdancer for over 20 years (my crew is the Lionz of Zion)… so as someone who loves dance I definitely plan on having some nights that will cater to all the dancers (housers, bboys/bgirls, hip-hop dancers). I want to create an environment that not only has great music but is fun and entertaining. I feel that the DC scene has lost some of that and plan to bring that type of energy back.”

After 5 years ( originally on the first floor and then upstairs) Ginger Root Design will be closing shop on U Street in March – from an email:

“Thank you to all of our wonderful customers and clients who have frequented our tailoring shop over the past 5 years! We’ve always appreciated you, and are proud that we’ve never once needed to advertise. Your word of mouth built our business, and we’re so grateful! You’ve always had our back as we transitioned throughout the years, and we’re excited to announce the next big news:

We are both pregnant!! And while we have absolutely loved our journey at Ginger Root, it is time for us to take another step forward as we each grow our families.

So, what does that mean?! We are winding things down at our U Street space, and we will be closing Ginger Root Design in March. We will still be tailoring right here in DC, however, out of our individual spaces (though we’re sure to collaborate still from time to time). As we both have different specialties, we are taking this as an opportunity to do what we do best! (more…)

Big news about one of the early Hilton brothers spots (h/t @barredindc) Patty Boom Boom is closing after 5 years on U Street. Their facebook page says:

“Dear all Patty Boom Boom lovas, February 21, 2015, we will close. Please catch all your favorite DJ’s for their last sets this month. Patty Boom Boom will “pop-up” in the Spring during Memorial Day weekend on Restaurant Marvin’s Deck and Den of Thieves DC!”

Patty Boom Boom opened up in January 2010. They did a nice reno of a beat up building – here’s how it partially looked in 2008:

The Hilton brothers (and other partners) of course still have Marvin, Gibson, Den of Thieves, American Ice Co., the Brixton, El Rey and Satellite Room nearby.

But Patty Boom Boom certainly brought a lot of flavor to U Street. They will be missed. Looking forward to seeing who takes over the space.

From an email:

“Rose’s House Party will be happening every Saturday night in February at 10:00pm at Compass Rose, “playing all the music you didn’t know you wanted to hear”…. In addition to tapping a keg of craft beer and pouring from a satellite bar (Solo cups and Sharpie included) we are bringing in a different D.C. DJ every Saturday this month . The line up is amazing! We are not becoming some crazy K street club though, no. We are trying to create a chill space where people can hang out with friends and enjoy some great music, food (late night khachapuri) and drinks.

The month of music is being kicked off by a good friend of Compass Rose, DJ Dirty Hands this Friday night (2/6). DJ Dirty Hands is a legend in DC and has been kind enough to help us arrange this event. After the kick off tomorrow he is quickly followed by his friend, DJ Stylus Chris on Saturday night. Then we have a different DJ each Saturday for the rest of the month. Including, DJ Trayze who just won the DC qualifier in the Red Bull Thre3Style competition. He will be representing DC in their national championship later this month.

“Thought your readers would like to know that D/CITY is collaborating with both Red Hook Lobster and DC Slices food trucks to give away free lunches to the first 100 people beginning at 11:45 AM tomorrow (Thurs) in front of Nellie’s Sports Bar; corner of 9th & U St. NW.”

From USA Today:

“Indianapolis Colts linebacker D’Qwell Lamar “Jackson, 31, was driving alone at 8 p.m. on the 1900 block of 12 Street N.W., a retail area in the downtown area, when he and another man got into an argument over a [parking] space, said Metropolitan Police spokesman officer Araz Alali. The altercation became physical when Jackson hit the man in the head, Alali said.”

“Dear PoPville,

The last two night walking up 14th on the way home from work around 6:15/6:30 I noticed Diego is closed. Inside visible from street but only by emergency lights and all the chairs are turned up on the tabletops. No sign in door. Interestingly enough the lounge upstairs IS open. Have you heard anything?? Two nights in row sounds odd. Not sure about last weekend as my outings did not take by there.”

They closed this weekend – they shared the news on Friday:

“It is with our most sincere apologies that DIEGO will be closing after this weekend. Please join us one last time for our freshly made guacamole and margaritas.

Diego will be open for brunch and Dinner ALL WEEKEND! We will see you soon and thank you for the many memories!”

Diego opened up at 14th and V St, NW in the former AM PM Carryout space back in July 2013.  They had a troubled start closing shortly after opening only to open a few weeks later with a new chef. Were there any fans?
