Well I am intrigued – thanks to a reader for passing on this Craigslist ad from last week:

Thanks to Melissa for passing on:

“SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 24
Go-Go Returns to U Street featuring Rare Essence (with opener Jahsonic)
$15 / 7pm doors / 18+

More information here.

Go-go is the unmistakable sound of Washington, D.C. The locally bred genre, known for its relentless rhythm, used to be a mainstay in the city, particularly throughout the bustling U Street corridor. While go-go’s presence in the nation’s capital has waned in recent years, it will make a triumphant return to U Street this month when U Street Music Hall welcomes legendary go-go band Rare Essence to its stage. This will be the first time in over 10 years that the group has performed on U Street. Opening for the evening will be Washington native DJ Jahsonic. Get ready for an evening of homegrown sounds when go-go returns to U Street!”

“Unexpected flavors forged from nature and mingled with flourish. Vibrant herbs grown as close to home as it gets (they’re from the rooftop garden). The freshest ingredients responsibly sourced both near and far.

This is modern bistronomy–casual fine dining where experimentation becomes the everyday. Experience cuisine that’s constantly evolving in a setting that’s forever inviting. Drink with delight at the bar. Make the menu your own. Let the exploration unfold.”

“Dear PoPville,

Hung Tao Choy Mei Leadership Institute is a kung fu school and cultural center on U St. between 13th and 14th NW. For decades, it has provided martial arts and traditional Chinese and African performance arts training free of charge to District kids. Recently, it lost city funding that sustained these critical after-school programs. At the same time, costs of remaining on U St. have increased dramatically. To cover these funding gaps and attempt to continue providing cultural education, physical fitness, and mentorship to children in the neighborhood, the school has launched a crowdfunding campaign.”

From WMATA:

“Metro today announced the completion of a major escalator replacement project at U Street Station. On Friday, the 13th Street entrance will reopen with two brand-new escalators in service.

The project, originally scheduled to take six months was completed a month ahead of schedule. (more…)

Hana Japanese Market opened up at 17th and U Street, NW back in 2008. It is hands down one of the greatest shops in the District of Columbia.

Hana posted these gut wrenching words on their Facebook page yesterday:

“Hana Market is closed. We plan to reopen ASAP. We deeply apologize for the inconvenience.”

A reader reports:

“My friend who works in a Japanese broadcasting company said they’re only closed for two weeks.”
