From a press release:

“Bardo brewpub & beergarden will tap a FOURTEEN year old keg of beer Sat, Oct 26th, 3pm. The Bardo GABF award winning White Lightnin’ barleywine has been cellaring for the last fourteen years on a loyal patron’s property. It is believed to be one of the oldest beers on the planet. Aged to a fine perfection, the cask conditioned ale has fermented to approximately 13% ABV.

“We gave an old friend a keg of beer before we put the brewery in storage in the years ago and he appeared out of nowhere last July with keg in tow”, Bardo big cheese, Bill Stewart explained. “It was an old school keg, and he couldn’t find the correct tap for it”.

When asked about the rarity of a beer aged for so long, Stewart replied, “When was the last time you had a chance to taste fourteen year old beer? I, myself, can’t remember ever having that chance, how about you? I had some four year old Old Crustacean once.” referring to Newport Oregon’s Rogue Ales powerhouse Barleywine, known for a distinct Old Bay flavor.

Bardo won a silver medal at the Great American Beer Festival for their White Lightnin’ Barleywine in 1994, during their days at the forefront of the Clarendon nightlife scene in Arlington. Bardo would go on to medal in 1996 with Bundaberg Ginger Beer and 1997 with their flagship brew, Dremo Tibetan Sasquatch. (more…)

HAWK

Previous HAWK systems have been installed in Cleveland Park and Chevy Chase.

From DDOT:

“On or about Wednesday, July 31 at approximately 10:30 a.m. the newly installed pedestrian HAWK (High-Intensity Activated crossWalK) signal at the Florida Avenue and 11th Street NE intersection will be made fully operational. This pedestrian HAWK signal is the sixth one to be installed in the District by the District Department of Transportation (DDOT) to help pedestrians safely cross high traffic volume streets.

District law requires motorists to legally stop and give the right of way to pedestrians within crosswalks. However, DDOT research has shown that on busy, high traffic roadways, only about one in four drivers are willing to stop for pedestrians in the crosswalk. If appropriate warrants are met, a HAWK signal can be installed on those roadways that do not meet engineering standards for installing a conventional traffic signal.

This pedestrian HAWK signal is currently operating in a flashing yellow mode to acclimate and alert drivers to the new signal. The HAWK’s full signal cycle and push buttons will be operational on or about July 31.

Back in October 2012 we learned Bardo brewpub would be reopening at 1200 Bladensburg Road, NE in Trinidad. In November 2012 we learned some more details:

Plans for the bar include self serve taps, 500 outdoor seats, a funky building made from shipping containers, and the biggest brewery in the DC area. Bardo Rodeo operated in the 90′s as the largest brewpub in the country. The 22000 sq. ft. facility included 900 indoor & 700 outdoor seats and a 25-barrel brewhouse. As one of the first bars in the Clarendon neighborhood in Arlington VA, Bardo brewed 4000 kegs a year and enjoyed thousands of visitors each weekend.

From the folks at Bardo:

“come by and drink some beer, play some cornhole, watch a movie, and enjoy the summer nights!”

They open Monday at 5pm! Regular hours will be 5pm to 1am.
