9th and Q Street, NW

Back in May we we posted some scuttlebutt about a new Japanese restaurant coming to 9th Street from the owners of Chaplin’s.  Chaplin’s is located down the street at 9th and P Street, NW and opened back in 2014. Some more details are now available for a liquor license application under the name Zeppelin:

A restaurant that will serve Japanese-themed sushi. The licensee is requesting a Sidewalk Café with seating for 60 patrons. They are also requesting an Entertainment Endorsement to provide live entertainment indoors only. Interior seating for 99, with a Total Occupancy Load of 122.

STAY TUNED.

A reader reports around 7am:

“I was just driving to work and saw police tape and a police officer with a homicide unit jacket on outside of the Sugar Shack donut shop on 9th by U St.”

MPD first tweeted:

“Shooting at 0118 hrs in the 1900 block of 9th St, NW. LOF: B/M, 20-30 YOA, 5’6″, heavy build, wearing a black shirt and blue jeans.”

From MPD:

“The Third District is currently investigating a double shooting in the 1900 block of 9th Street NW. Two adult males have been transported to an area hospital with critical injuries.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect road closures in the area.

Anyone with information is asked to call 202-727-9099.”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if any of your other readers have had trouble with the Sugar Shack on 9th Street not sticking to their advertised hours (they are supposed to open at 6:30). This morning [Sunday] I tried to go get donuts at 7:50, and the shop was still dark and the door was locked. (more…)

Whoa. Thanks to Julia (and others) for sending. Julia saw these signs posted around 7:30pm Friday night: “Wubalubadub pub pop-up in Shaw shut down for an emergency.”

Drink Company Facebook says:

“Wubba Lubba Dub PUB was designed by fans for fans, though we think everyone would have enjoyed it. It was a labor of love and included hand sewn Meeseeks from our CEO Angie’s mother; graffiti work by an incredible artist; a 25-foot Ruben cut out by our Special Projects Director, hockey-referee-turned-craftsman Matt Fox; and deep references to a show that has made us all laugh out loud and confront the deeper meaning behind the gags. In a word, we are fans geeking out.

Turner Broadcasting/Cartoon Network wasn’t willing to let us do that and demanded we shut down. We then reached an agreement, and thus delayed for a week, but they changed their minds, threatened us with exorbitant fees and then took everything off the table today and refused to talk any further. Update from Audrey Fix Schaefer

“Live At 9:30”
Merriweather Post Pavilion:

“it’s unequivocally not true.”

“Dear PoPville,

I heard a terrible rumor from a friend in the music industry that the 9:30 Club is not long for this world. All of the big acts go down to the Anthem now, and this friend said the owners of 9:30 keep getting offers from developers that are ever higher and harder to refuse.

I have noticed that Satellite Room is rarely open Monday – Wednesday anymore (it was completely dark by 7:00 Wednesday night), wondering if this doesn’t substantiate it a bit. Would obviously be a huge loss for Shaw/U Street and the whole city, just wondering if anyone has heard anything similar.”

Again, THIS IS JUST A RUMOR. But it is worth talking about because I actually heard this same rumor a number of months ago. I asked somebody who is very well connected to the powers that be and he said there are absolutely no current plans for 9:30 Club to shutter/sell and he didn’t think they would. Having said that, the incredibly development going on all around 9:30 Club has changed things. I mean I don’t think I need to go into the history of 9:30 Club – everyone knows they are the best club in D.C. and quite possibly the country. They have had legendary performances there. They are the best. Period.

However, the Shaw of today is not the same as the Shaw/U Street of 1996 when they moved there. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday morning I was assaulted by another woman while I running (9:20am) at the corner of 8 and Q St, NW. The woman was in front of me, and as I went to pass her on the left, she stuck out her foot and tripped me,

Then pushing me into the short metal fence. She also proceeded to yell at me and insult me for basically just running. (more…)

Thanks to Jeremy for sharing the great news that the original Thai-Xing has reopened for business: “I had dinner there last night and it was amazing.”

I believe this location had been closed at least a year, right? Thai-Xing opened their second location, 2020 9th St, NW, near 9:30 Club back in 2014. I’ve always felt that the original location was superior but that could be just cause I’m an old dude. Anyway, great news!!
