This guy was great. He seemed to know everyone. And everyone referred to him as the preacher. Awesome mural too, yeah?

My walks are taking me further and further around town these days. After nearly passing out a few times on Saturday I found some solace in Azi’s Cafe located at 9th and O in Shaw. Apparently it’s been open since 2005 and as a good coffee shop should be there is free wifi and good music playing. The chairs aren’t quite as comfortable as Columbia Heights Coffee but their regular coffee is made with Illy coffee and you don’t really get better than that. A latte costs $2.85 and a regular coffee is $1.60. They also have a nice outdoor area. Has anyone checked them out before?

Apparently a dude from Shaw faced an attempted mugging on his porch on Westminster Street. And fought off the muggers!
He explains why he fought them off:
“Well in my pockets were not only my wallet and cellphone, but my brand new digital camera that I had purchased to document my mother’s wedding & excursions in Colorado. Had the thugs pulled out a gun or a knife I would have surrendered everything, but they didn’t, and I knew that if I would have voluntarily handed them the contents I would have lost all the photographs & video clips forever.”
Damn. Three against one. Well, thankfully he wasn’t hurt too bad. It’s funny as I often walk around for 5-6 hours taking photos I often wonder what I would do if I was mugged with my camera. Sometimes when I’m walking around alleys in Shaw or Bloomingdale I get a very unsettling feeling. In a similar circumstance I’d like to think that I’d fight as well. However, I suspect if these guys approached me on my porch not only would I have handed over everything in my pockets I probably would’ve invited them inside my house and given them my glue stash, my prized Adlai Stevenson and Eleanor Roosevelt photograph among other valuables. Insane. Do you think this guy made the right choice or just got supremely lucky?

All of our neighborhoods should be lucky enough to have a liquor store like Good Libations located at 1201 5th Street (5th and M) in the Shaw neighborhood. This past Saturday Good Libations’ owner, Ronny, hosted a great customer appreciation event for the community. There was live music (Pete Muldoon and Ameen Saleem pictured above), sangria tasting, dominoes, empanadas, salsa dancing and lessons and an all around good time. Check out lots more photos after the jump. (more…)

Damn, I love water features. This is also a really sweet yard with lots of cool paths. Check out some more photos after the jump. (more…)

I don’t think this building is a grocery store anymore but I love the fact that they kept the sign. It looks fantastic, yeah? If I were going to open a grocery store that’s without a doubt the name I would choose.

I always like to give props to sweet city signs. So I’ll say, right on National Alliance of Postal and Federal Employees!

I think this is a personal home and not a commercial space. That makes the display 1000 times more fantastic. They must really love flamingos.

At least I think this 11th and W – I was severely dehydrated at this point… We’ve talked about this house before but a reader mentioned it in the comments from last week, something about it being the same architect who is doing the development above the Florida Ave Grill. I took a picture this week because I was marveling at the balcony. I like how it juts out over the side. Super cool. Close up after the jump. (more…)
