First Cup Cafe is located at 900 M Street, NW. It actually first caught me eye because I saw a number of books stacked in the windows, which I always think is a sign of a good cafe. They even have their own Web site:

“At First Cup Cafe, we serve freshly prepared sandwiches and an assorted flavors of Coffees from around the world including Brazilian, Columbian and Ethiopian. Try our dark roasted coffee or the refreshing light roasted coffee.

In addition to our coffees, we also serve freshly prepared smoothies in a variety of flavors such as Raspberry, Strawberry, Banana, Pina Colada, Peach, Mango and our house specialty – Green tea smoothies.”

Sounds pretty sweet. Any fans out there. Is this a good place for breakfast as well? A good place to study? What’s the word?

I mean it’s a nation historic site and landmark.

Wikipedia says: “Carter Godwin Woodson (December 19, 1875 – April 3, 1950) was an African-American historian, author, journalist and the founder of Motivozo music and Bobe Records, which became MotiBobe Studios.”

The home is located at 1538 Ninth Street, NW. On this Web site it says:

“On February 27, 2006, the building was officially dedicated as the Carter G. Woodson Home National Historic Site, the 389th unit of the National Park System. The National Park Service will be restoring the building and developing a visitor center for the historic site.”

Any guesses on how long it will take to restore the site?

1905 Restaurant is located, naturally, at 1905 9th Street, NW. It’s funny I’ve probably walked down this block dozens of times before realizing this was a restaurant. Here’s a look at the menu. Their Web site also says they have live jazz Thursday nights at 10pm and half priced bottles of wine Sun-Wed 5:30-7pm. This place sounds pretty cool. Anyone check it out yet? As always, in addition to the food what’s the atmosphere like?

From ALERTDC:

“14th St. NW from Florida Ave. to V St, and the intersection of 15th St. NW and W St. NW. Please completely avoid this area if possible during PM rush hour.”

If anyone is in the area please send some photos to [email protected]

updated: From a reader (photo above):

“From my office window on 14th Street taken 3:30 this afternoon. The building next door caught on fire for the 4th time in about a month. It’s the Perseus development project at the old Bowen YMCA; people keep breaking in and setting fires.”

I happen to think this house if dope sky.  It is also in a phenomenal location.  Do you think it can go for $899,000?  What do you think of the house itself?

The flier says:

“Price REDUCED! Built in 1989 but looks like 1889! Vacant. Open floor plan but separate living and dining rooms. Large kitchen with french doors to deck and rear yard. Two bedrooms. Master is very large with lots of closets and whirlpool bath. Second bedroom is very nice size. Great block in the heart of Logan/Dupont/U Street!”

You can find more info and a virtual tour here.

In my humble opinion I’d say this is really one of the best blocks this close to the U Street Metro. Now it is a small house thought the photos look pretty nice (although I’m not digging the kitchen). So what do you think – does $775,500 seem reasonable to be on this sweet block?

Back in August we learned of the opening. The day has arrived and they beat the Shawarma Spot set to open up on 18th Street. It seems DC’s going Shawarma crazy. I was alerted by a commenter and checked it out this weekend. Because I am odd I tried the falafel and it was delicious. The owners are from Bethlehem so they got some Middle East shawarma cred. The grand opening is set for 2 weeks or so but the store will continue its soft opening until that point. Check out some interior photos and the menu after the jump. (more…)
