“Dear PoP,

Just this week a new takeout place opened in Shaw: Pizza D’Oro 717 T St NW, Washington, DC. Tel: 202-588-1900. We went tonight and really liked the food. We are so excited to have a new, easy takeout place to get yummy (albeit unhealthy) food within walking distance of our house. We feel like it is a welcome addition to the neighborhood. We hope people will check it out!”

Back in Feb. ’11 we learned that a pizza spot was coming to 717 T St, NW. Anyone else try them out yet? Do they deliver as well?

“Dear PoP,

Today my girlfriend and I checked out a Mexican restaurant called Cafe Eagle at 1414 9th St. NW. I found you posted about that address a year ago, but it looks like it has shifted from an Eritrean/Ethiopian restaurant to a Mexican one. It looks like they’re still putting things together (the only menu is a sign board that’s leaning against a wall), but they are selling food. Our tacos and tamales cost 2 dollars each and were great. The waiter told us the restaurant opened on Friday. Just thought I’d give you a head’s up and encourage others to go there for some great Mexican.”

Anyone else try them out yet?

I know it’s tough because there aren’t any photos inside but I like the location and the price so I’m curious what you guys think – $1950 sound right for this 2 bedroom English basement?

“Dear PoP,

Sad news – check out the Shaw’s Tavern Facebook page. Looks like they’re not making enough money to stay open while they don’t have a liquor license. Hopefully there will be a positive outcome from the hearing and they’ll be able to reopen. Bummed because I’ve been gone on business travel all month and was looking forward to trying to food when I get back next week!”

Shaw’s Tavern Facebook page says:

“Shaw’s Tavern is closing its doors from Saturday 27th of August.
We could not survive without a liquor license. We will re -open when we are allowed to serve alcohol.”

Shaw’s Tavern is located at 520 Florida Ave, NW. They opened without a liquor license on July 29th 2011.

CityPaper’s Young and Hungry wrote last week:

“At a hearing on Aug. 10, a city inspector testified about documents allegedly doctored by a tavern manager, which were used to illegally obtain alcohol from wholesalers for pre-opening festivities.

The board, in recess until Sept. 14, is expected to rule on Shaw’s lingering liquor issues within 90 days.”

I’ve featured this home numerous times – always fun to see them for sale. Thanks to a reader for the heads up. What do you think of the inside? This 4 bed/2 bath is going for $1,195,000.

Back in April we briefly spoke about Red Toque when they got a new awning. I’ve since heard from folks that the food is awesome but they never seem to be very busy. And since we’ve been on a kabob roll I thought it was time for a proper judging of Red Toque. They are located at 6th and R St, NW and you can see their menu here. Is the food as good as I hear it is? Any must order items?

It’s been a long journey for Ken’s. Last we heard in July it looked like they were going to become a Chinese Restaurant. Alas the mystery is no longer – thanks to a reader for sending the word:

“Ken’s Carryout is becoming…

Arthur Treacher’s! I don’t really know how this is going to work, since it’s a small space and there probably won’t be much room for seating, but there it is.”

According to wikipedia:

“Arthur Treacher’s Fish and Chips is a fast food seafood restaurant chain. As of 2008, there were 45 stores in 8 northern states of the United States which serve fish and chips. Its main competitors are Long John Silver’s and Captain D’s. To this day many locations have been cobranded with Nathan’s.”

Any fans?
