In April 2011 we first learned of Bistro Bohem coming to 1840 6th St, NW (the corner of 6th and Florida Ave, NW.) Well, add this to the pile of amazing transformations hitting DC. I was lucky enough to get an early preview last night and I still haven’t stopped smiling. Not only were the food and drinks amazing but the space itself is super chill. I can see this being a great date spot too. And they had schnitzel – I love schnitzel!

You can see their drink and food menu in pdf below:

Bistro Bohem Menus (PDF)

You’ll soon see an announcement on their Facebook page announcing a preview for the neighborhood tonight from 7-10pm and a grand opening next week.

Oh yeah – this also only part one! They also will be expanding into the former Zee’s restaurant next door at 600 Florida Ave, NW. That expansion which should take place over the next month will feature a coffee cafe featuring Julius Meinl coffee and fresh pastries which, will be open during the day.

It’s just amazing to watch this section of Florida Ave blossom before my eyes. Remember this is what it used to look like not too long ago.

From the Ledroit Park Listserv:

“During last week’s LeDroit Park Civic Association meeting, a neighbor asked Damon Harvey of DDOT about parking plans to accommodate the soon-to-open Howard Theatre patrons. He stated that a plan was still being worked on.

This topic is on the ANC-2C meeting agenda for tonight, 6:30 pm at the Watha Daniel/Shaw Library, 1630 7th Street NW.”

via Shaw-Howard Listserv:

Among the items on the agenda for Wednesday’s ANC meeting will the plan Gretchen Wharton and I developed after talking to Alex Padro (chair of our ANC) and Myla Moss (chair of the LeDroit Park ANC) about how to deal with parking congestion at present and the increased congestion that the Howard Theatre will cause.

I’ve drafted a proposal about that here including a map of the area where we propose to create “sub-zones.” In a nutshell, only those with a subzone sticker (residents and their guests) could park on one side of each block.

We’re not sure what DDOT might already have in mind, so it’s probably premature to get into the specifics of how this would be implemented (e.g., how they would distribute sub-zone stickers). But we’d welcome any comments or suggestions you might have on the basic idea, and we’ll report back once we hear from DDOT about their thinking. Obviously, with the Howard Theatre set to open April 12 and 54 shows planned between then and early September, the sooner we get this implemented, the better!

Their Website says:

Welcome to Cause Bar and Restaurant, where giving has never been so easy. Cause is a bar like you’ve never seen before. We like to call it a PhilanthroPub.

Here is how it works:

Step 1: You come to Cause; eat, drink, and be merry

Step 2: Cause pays its staff, covers all operating costs

Step 3: Cause takes ALL of the remaining profits, and gives them to pre-vetted nonprofit organizations

Starting in April, come in, have a good time, all for a good Cause!

You can find more background info about the charitable aspect here. You can see their food menu here and you’ll soon be able to see the drink menu here. The executive chef is Adam Stein formerly of Queen Vic.

Like the idea of a Philanthropub?

Yesterday we learned that the Shakti Yoga space was coming up for lease at 1302 9th St, NW. It seems that is not the only space coming up for lease on the 1300 block of 9th St, NW. The Lamont Bishop Gallery space at 1314 9th St, NW is also coming up for lease. They have a new exhibition launching March 7th so it’s not clear when the space will be vacated. The landlord commented yesterday:

“They are 6 months in arrears in rent etc. and an eviction is forthcoming.”

1314 9th St, NW is located in front of Sundevich and next to Seasonal Pantry.

A reader asks via the @PoPville twitter feed:

Howard theatre sounds great. But what about the failing Lincoln? Seems they will be even worse off now with the ‘competition’.”

I think that’s a really interesting question – do you think (if it is one) Howard Theatre’s (6th and T St, NW) success will hurt the relatively nearby Lincoln Theatre at 1215 U St, NW. Is this even more reason for the Lincoln Theatre to focus on movies? Or do you think the city, especially with all the new development/revitalization planned for the area, is big enough to support two historic theatres in Shaw/U Street?

Last week we learned that Wanda Sykes would be headlining at the newly reopened Howard Theatre in April. Now comes many more details (and awesome old photos) from a press release:

The Howard Theatre, the historic arts landmark that launched the careers of Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Marvin Gaye and The Supremes, announces their grand re-opening after a $29 million renovation with a star-studded opening gala and lineup of top-tier events. The Howard Theatre will re-open the week of April 9th with performances by Wale, The Roots, Robert Randolph, Taj Mahal, Yasiin Bey (aka Mos Def), Meshell Ndegeocello, Bad Brains, Chuck Brown and comedienne Wanda Sykes.

On April 12th, the new venue will host a Grand Opening Gala Fundraiser presenting performers from the Howard Theatre’s past and future including Smokey Robinson, Al Jarreau, Madeleine Peyroux, Savion Glover and many more. The event will honor famed Motown Records founder and producer Berry Gordy, who will be in attendance. A full slate of wide-ranging performances in the 12,000 square foot, 650 seat (1,100-standing room) theatre will continue with a lineup that includes Chuck Berry, Chaka Khan, Esperanza Spalding, Jack Bruce, Boyz II Men and a weekly Sunday Brunch featuring the Harlem Gospel Choir. The scheduled lineup is listed at the end of this release.

The Howard Theatre will be operated by Blue Note Entertainment Group, the owners and operators of clubs and theaters around the world which include the Blue Note Jazz Club, B.B. King Blues Club and The Highline Ballroom in New York.

An Old Theatre Steeped in New Design and Technology

The Howard Theatre features a regal windowed façade, originally incorporated into the structure in 1941, and combines elements of Beaux Arts, Italian Renaissance and neoclassical design.

The balconied interior is built with flexibility including supper club-style seating for approximately 650, which can be quickly removed through elevated hydraulic platforms to allow standing room for 1,100. The new configuration, with black walnut walls, oak floors and Brazilian granite bars on each level, features a $2 million state-of-the-art acoustic system, 10’ video screens and recording capabilities allowing The Howard to retain the intimate feel of its former 1,200-seat space, while appealing to both traditional and digital-age audiences, be it for a live performance, a private gala or a political fundraiser. A deeper stage, basement and additional wing space provides for enhanced set preparation, gourmet kitchen and administrative office space. A 600-square-foot museum and gift shop will showcase memorabilia, photos and videos of the astounding array of artists and guests who graced The Howard in years past. 100 dedicated parking spaces will be available at the neighboring mixed-use development, Progression Place.

A Washington Dining Destination

In addition to first-rate entertainment, the Howard Theatre will feature a full dining menu designed by consulting chef, Marcus Samuelsson , the youngest chef to ever receive two three-star ratings from The New York Times . In addition to designing the dinner and brunch menus, Marcus and his team from the Marcus Samuelsson Group will assist in the appointment of the Theatre’s executive chef and develop the training program for the culinary staff.

Continues after the jump. (more…)
