“Dear PoPville,

I believe it was an old car repair shop back in the day, but it has sat empty for a while now. Construction started on it a couple days ago… looks like they are knocking everything down to the ground and will be building back up. Do you know what is going in?”

Looks like it’ll be a development from Community Three:

“Community Three’s mission is to create value within communities through the successful development of underutilized real estate. Community Three seeks investments that, with the addition of relevant expertise, knowledge and skill, improve the fabric of the community while rewarding investors for their measured risk. Our company is committed to the timely evaluation of investment opportunities and mindful of its commitments to all stakeholders, with the ultimate goal of successfully implementing practical and innovative development solutions.”

Though no address is listed it looks like it might be called “four thirty five”.

12th and S St, NW

The long vacant building at the corner of 12 and S St, NW has undergone significant renovations recently. Back in May 2010 we heard a deli could be coming to the space. This morning I got confirmation that a coffee shop is coming soon. Cafe Collage recently closed nearby at 14th and T St, NW. Think a coffee shop would do well at the corner of 12th and S St, NW?

More info soon!

903 N St, NW

When we last checked in on Table we learned that there would be a 60 seat roof deck.

Here’s some more info from a press release:

Chef Frederik de Pue, owner of 42° Catering, will open the doors of his first restaurant early this November, on or about Friday, November 3. Located at 903 N Street NW in the burgeoning Shaw/Logan Circle neighborhood, near Bladgen Alley and the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, Table (French pronunciation; Tahb-luh) will draw on classic European sensibilities to create a comfortable neighborhood dining experience.

“Much of the vision for Table comes from my experience growing up in Belgium and working in some of the most important kitchens throughout Europe,” explained Chef de Pue. “Everything is coming together just as I had hoped, from the menu and kitchen, to the space and location. I am truly delighted to open my first restaurant in the heart of Washington, D.C. and to share my approach to cooking and eating with clients, friends, and guests from all over.”

The dining philosophy behind the concept embodies a return to an old world, small-scale dining experience that emphasizes honest, delicious food with interesting, limited offerings and standards inspired by classic cooking. Table’s small menu will offer a selection of approachable yet innovative dishes, with a mix of standards and daily entrée specials, accompanied by appetizer, salad, main dish and dessert categories. Entrées may include frogs’ legs, rabbit, octopus, scallops, handmade pastas, and other interesting and infrequently seen restaurant menu items, and will change to reflect product availability, Chef de Pue’s palate and guest feedback. Handwritten menus will change to reflect fresh produce and quality meats available from local and regional purveyors.

The restaurant will serve dinner in the initial opening phase, expanding its offerings to breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch at the start of February 2013. Breakfast/brunch and lunch menus will feature cheese and charcuterie plates, house-baked goods, egg dishes, and fresh juices. The bar will offercraft beer and about 20 wines by the glass, including a small selection of champagnes.

Originally an auto repair space, the restaurant building has been simply restored with a contemporary feel to retain the casual urban feel of the Shaw/Logan Circle neighborhood. De Pue has designed the 75-seatspace to include a modern, minimalist kitchen and clean-lined tables. A changing seasonal color palette will be reflected in the menus, staff aprons, artwork, and window décor, and a storefront patio and rooftop deck will provide seasonal outdoor seating.

1926 9th St, NW

Back in March 2012 we first learned that Cause would be taking over the old La Carbonara Space at 1926 9th St, NW just south of U Street.

They’ve completed their extensive renovations and the two floor space looks great:

Lots of great reclaimed wood:

Awesome skylights throughout:

Here’s a first look at their menu:

In addition to the menu there will be 10 daily specials, based on seasonally available ingredients prepared by Chef Adam Stein.

Draft beer will be rotating on a regular basis but they’ll start with:

Guinness
Great Lakes Eliot Ness Amber
Franziskaner Hefe-Weizen
Port City Monumental IPA
Lost Rhino RhinO’Fest Marzen
Chocolate City “Bridge Builder” Scotch Ale

They are having a sneak preview party on Saturday. Tickets are $50 for admission, hors d’oeurves, plus beer and wine. The grand opening will be Wed. Oct. 24th at 8pm. You can read all about their philosophy here.

725 T St, NW

Dear PoPville,

Do you by chance know what’s going on with not-yet-opened All Souls Tavern at 8th and T, NW?

Last I heard they were targeting a Halloween opening. I walked by today and it looks like there are a couple of white bench/table things in there, but overall, it still looks very decrepit, inside and out and certainly nowhere close to opening. An employee from a nearby business commented that there had been some activity there, but they hadn’t seen anything happening for a few weeks. What gives?

Lots of folks have been writing asking about the status of All Souls. I’m told, unfortunately, there was a delay getting structural engineer plans which was needed before permitting was issued. That seems to be back on track and the new goal is to now open in “early 2013”.

641 S Street, NW

From a press release:

Douglas Development is pleased to announce the selection of Jones Lang LaSalle (JLL) to lease the remaining 53,108 square feet of office space in the former Wonder Bread building, located at 641 S Street NW. Currently under construction, the building will deliver in the 1st quarter of 2013.

WorkSpaces, LLC, an office space and furniture consultancy, committed in March 2012 to become a tenant in the building, pre-leasing 20,817 square feet of office space on the third floor. JLL has been hired to lease the remaining office space.

The renovated Wonder Bread Factory building will feature loft-like office space, with industrial-style skylights and high ceilings, giving the building modern touches with a historical façade and feel. The renovated building will also feature 16,859 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, to be leased by Douglas Development.

Here’s what a reader saw inside the building back in 2009.

3011 M Street, NW

Thanks to another reader who spotted this sign announcing Fino Italian Restaurant’s closure in Georgetown and move to 1230 9th St, NW. The sign says they hope to open the new location by the New Year.

Any fans of Fino?

The new location is located across the street from the Convention Center and near the Mt. Vernon Square metro stop next to Wag Time:

9th and Rhode Island Ave, NW

Back in July we noted the transformation of the back half of the former “Slum Historique” building at 9th and Q St, NW. Now the front half at 9th and Rhode Island, Ave is looking equally as nice. Looks like it’ll be 2 apartments upstairs plus retail space on the first floor. Looking forward to seeing who takes the retail space. I can’t believe how great this corner now looks. Amazing.
