Congrats to Veranda on their 9 year anniversary!! Party tonight – vegetarians look away:

Gone but not forgotten.
From American University:
“Matt Shlonsky loved Washington, DC. Since arriving at American University in 2010, Matt had embraced his adopted city, attending historical events, concerts, and other local activities across the district. After his graduation from the School of International Service in May 2014, Matt elected to remain in Washington, starting a career in business communications and consulting. Matt continued to give back to the School of International Service as a generous volunteer and a donor. Matt was already on his way to a successful career with Deloitte and other exciting pursuits outside of his work.
Our hearts are broken to report that Matt’s future of unlimited possibilities ended tragically on August 15, 2015, when he fell victim to gun violence in Washington. Matt left behind a loving family, many hundreds of loyal friends, and a remarkable legacy of caring and kindness that betrayed his 23 years. (more…)

Simon Vintage [1911 9th Street, NW] tweets us:
“Now we say goodbye, we will miss you! OPEN till We move Oct 24th. We’re moving to Neptune City NJ on Jersey Shore nr Asbury Park about 1.5hrs from #NYC …we may “pop-up” in DC from time to time!”

A couple weeks ago we learned “Dacha seems to be in very big trouble with ABRA”. Think they can rally enough support to save themselves? If not, CityPaper reported:
“Dacha Beer Garden owners Dmitri Chekaldin and Ilya Alter are laying off half of their staff and negotiating to sell the business amid a battle with the Advisory Neighborhood Commission over their capacity level.
Meanwhile, the owners are in negotiations to sell the business to a big German beer brand (which Chekaldin declined to name) that has plans for several beer gardens in the U.S.”
Think Dacha would survive/continue to thrive if it’s bought by “a big German beer brand”?

“Dear PoPville,
Anyone know what’s going on to the building right by Duffy’s? Looks like it is finally under construction.”
I’ve been getting a few emails mentioning that work had finally started at 2100 Vermont Ave, NW. Back in August of 2014 we finally learned who’d be moving into long vacant building next to Duffy’s – Wet Dog Tavern. The liquor license placard revealed it’ll be:
“Tavern serving American Food. Occasional live entertainment to include Deejays, live music
and dancing.
Sidewalk Café Seats is 30, Summer Garden with Backyard Seats of 70.
Summer Garden RoofDeck total is 30
Entertainment Endorsement, Cover Charge, Dancing. Total Occupancy Load 200.”
Stay tuned.

I was able to get a sneak peek at a preview party last night and it is pretty swank. Some of the theaters were much smaller than I expected but damn the seats are posh.
For those who missed the earlier release:
“Landmark Theatres is proud to announce the opening of Washington DC’s newest movie theatre and lounge, Atlantic Plumbing Cinema. The premiere film will be STEVE JOBS, starring Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet and Seth Rogen. It premieres Thursday, October 15 at 8 PM and will be featured on all 6 screens.”

Declaration’s website says:
“DECLARATION, Shaw’s most exciting new gourmet pizza eatery, is set to open mid-fall 2015. Our menu will include casual fare, including gourmet artisan pizzas, pasta and fresh, creative salads. As with our restaurants LINCOLN and Teddy & The Bully Bar, we will source ingredients from local growers, ranchers and artisans. The restaurant’s interior design will include interesting touches that introduce fun and little-known facts about the period of American history in which the Declaration of Independence was signed. Located in bustling Shaw, our 1,776 square foot restaurant is being built out this summer and will be within walking distance of the 9:30 Club. Make us your go-to for lunch, before or after a night out with friends or as a destination in and of itself!”
Here are the pizza’s:
“Lewis Morris, San marzano tomatoes, fresh basil, evoo, romano cheese, house made mozzarella
Francis Hopkinson, Jersey sliced tomatoes, basil pesto, reggiano Parmesan
Thomas Jefferson, Shenandoah Valley chicken, apples, gorgonzola, arugula, mozzarella
Roger Sherman, Meatball, house made ricotta, san marzano tomatoes, roasted peppers
John Adams, Shucked clams, potatoes, pork belly, thyme, fontina cheese
Benjamin Franklin, Cheesesteak, provolone, fresh mozzarella, sweet onions,
John Hancock, Cape codder, bay scallops, bacon, roasted garlic, fresh mozzarella”

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a Convivial update. This is the new spot from Mintwood‘s Chef Cedric Maupillier. First because it’s been a long time coming – let me get some dates out of the way – they’ll be opening up for dinner in November (six nights a week, closed Monday.) By January they’ll be open seven days a week serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. And in the spring they’ll have a patio for 50 out front. The space wasn’t photo ready when I stopped in last week but you can see that they’ll have a sweet central bar that seats 14. And speaking of the bar they’ll have 50, repeat, 50 classic cocktails as well as eight draft lines. More on that when the menus become available.

As for the rest of the inside there will be seating for around 130. Come January in the daytime the space will be a casual cafe with wifi and at night it will be a bit more refined serving proper dinner. So I asked Maupillier – how Convivial would compare to Mintwood. Right away he said he didn’t want to do a “Mintwood II”.
Ed. Note: Let me just take a second to say that Mintwood is one of my favorite restaurants in DC. Most agree that it elevated the dining scene in Adams Morgan to new levels. Of course Little Fountain Cafe has and still does continue to kick ass too. But I absolutely think Convivial will do for this part of Shaw what Mintwood has done for Adams Morgan.
Convivial will be an “American Café”. He’s looking forward to creating some great dishes with both “French and American accents.” Again more on that when the menus are released. With one exception – fried chicken. Behold the pressure fryer:

This is going to introduce DC to what many have been craving – serious, serious, seriously delicious friend chicken. And in the case of Convivial it will be fried chicken – coq au vin style with a jus glaze. Oh man – in no way can I do justice to how Maupillier described it (which will change with seasons.) But let me just say the enthusiasm he expressed for the dish was absolutely contagious. I don’t even particularly like coq au vin and I was down right giddy by the time he finished talking. We can all see for ourselves in just a few more weeks. Lots more updates coming as the finishing details are worked out and an exact opening date is announced. Stay tuned.

Back in July we learned that The Passenger’s new home would be right next door to Ivy and Coney on 7th Street. They’ve now posted a liquor license placard which reveals a roof deck could be in the future too. “Summer Garden” used interchangeable with a roof deck.
The placard says:
“Restaurant serving bar food (burgers, hotdogs, etc.) Occasional entertainment may include DJ or live music. Number of seats: 175. Total Occupancy Load: 175. Sidewalk Café with seating for 10 and Summer Garden with seating for 75.”
