“Dear PoP,

After a long separation, my dog will be moving back in with me (from my parents’) over the holidays. I’m relatively new to the neighborhood, and have seen a few dogs around, but I’m curious if there are some suggestions about dog friendly parks in the Petworth/Parkview area?

Also, I’d love to know if folks have any suggestions for dog walkers, vets, and boarding. I know – it’s a lot of dog questions, but I appreciate any help I can get! Thanks a lot!”

Well, we had some good recommendations for dog park/dog friendly spots here. Eric Nuzum wrote about doggie day care here. Can anyone recommend some good dog walkers, vets and/or boarding spots?

A reader writes:

“Water is out in a large swath of Petworth. “Pumps have failed” and WASA will not say when they will be fixed.”

Anyone having water problems this morning?

I received a number of emails about the following incident. Will update when word comes out from MPD.

“I live on Rock Creek Church Rd, directly across from Eighth Street, right by the Petworth Metro, and last night a little after 1 a.m. I heard a lot of shouting and I think at least one gunshot; sure enough, the police were swarming and took two people to the hospital, there was some blood on the street. Weirdly, both people came out of a silver car, not sure how it was involved.”

I’m not sure if it’s related to this incident from the 3700 block of New Hampshire Ave. From MPD at 2:31am:

“4D officers are on the scene of a shooting in the 3700 block of New Hampshire Ave., NW. Two adult Hispanic males were shot in the legs. The injuries appear to be non-life threatening. They were transported to local hospitals. There is no lookout at this time for any suspect. Anyone having information about this event is urged to call 1-888-919-CRIME or 727-9099.”

Thanks to a reader for the heads up on the work going on at 3543 Georgia Ave. across from the EL Haynes charter school. Sadly, there was a bit of a language barrier in my brief chat with the workers out front. They did however confirm that a restaurant was going in. When I asked what type they said American but I’ll be sure to follow up when they open. And in nearby news it was nice to see the new Senior Center rising a half block to the south at Georgia and Newton:

It’s not often I get emailed props for the Petworth Safeway, in fact this may be the first one, glad to hear it!

“Dear PoP,

I was at the Petworth Safeway (3830 Georgia Avenue) last night around 8:30 PM. While waiting in line, a checkout clerk opened up the register next to mine and called me over to his register. As I was coming around, someone else rushed in front of me, even though I only had one item. As I was allowing the annoyance to settle in and decide what to do, the clerk reached back to me and told the other person that he had asked me to come to his register and that I was first. The other person was pretty rude, but the clerk kept his composure despite offensive comments from the first person, and just told him, politely, that I was there first and he would take care of him in a minute.

What the clerk didn’t know, is that I was buying hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting in my dog at the advice of ASPCA poison control. He had eaten onions, and in fact it was very important for me to get home as soon as possible. (Many people don’t know this but onions are extremely toxic to dogs, more so than chocolate, and even a small amount can cause great harm).

I didn’t get the clerk’s name but he is a middle-aged thin black man with a mustache, I’ve seen him there before, and I just wanted to recognize his professional behavior which stands out in a world where I’ve gotten used to often apathetic and sometimes downright rude behavior from checkout clerks.”

Back in June we learned that SisterSpace would be opening up at 3717 Georgia Ave. right by the Petworth Metro. I’m happy to report that they’ve opened! (Thanks to a reader for the heads up.) While the space is small it looks great. I briefly chatted with the owners who were super nice and mentioned that if they don’t have a book that you’d like they’ll happily order it for you. At the moment the hours are a bit limited and they’ll be open Thursday – Sunday from 12pm – 7pm. You can learn more about SisterSpace on their Web site here, they’re much more than just a bookstore. They’ll also be hosting educational and cultural events as well as workshops.

It’s been a while since we’ve looked at the former “Petworth Eyesore” located at the corner of Upshur and New Hampshire. Here’s what it looked like in April 2007 and here’s what it looked like in July of this year. I have to say the difference between July and now is amazing. I’m not saying it’s my favorite renovation but it’s a hell of a lot better than what it was fixing to look like.

“Dear PoP,

I just wanted to give a shout-out for Kilroy’s Cleaners, in part because they’ve gone green. Apparently they’ve replaced their machines and are now one of the only dry cleaners in the District to use a non-toxic dry cleaning method.

I’ve lived in Petworth for many years now and finally tried Kilroy’s a couple of months ago. I hesitated because I read a negative post or two on PoP, and the storefront isn’t the most attractive in the world. Well, I’ve found them to be the perfect neighborhood cleaners. All their employees try to know my name and will do anything to make sure I’m happy. The prices are very reasonable, and they are flexible when you need a garment turned around right away. When I learned they went green, I mentioned that they should reach out to you. Turns out they still very much regret that they had an unfriendly employee at the time that you did a profile of them or something. I hope you’ll consider giving them an opportunity to shine. Everyone deserves a second chance, particularly those that are investing and creating jobs in our neighborhood.”

This is great news. I’ll be sure to try them out again (at 826 Upshur St NW) for my next batch of dry cleaning!

Corehaus will be opening up next week in the former Shaka King space located at 825 Upshur St (near Domku). The owner, James Kerns, was extremely nice and succinctly characterized the business as “taking old stuff and making it cool again”. While the finishing touches were still being completed I was able to take some photos and the items do indeed look pretty cool. This is Mr. Kerns first brick and mortar store, but you can see his Web site here.

This is a great addition to the block along with Bentley’s across the street.
