From the organizer Wayan Vota:

“Time to mark your calenders and reschedule your meetings – we’re gonna
have a Green Line Professionals meeting this Friday.

This is your chance to get out of the house and join your fellow
working-from-home folks and share tips and ticks around balancing work
and home life when there are no physical boundaries to set the separation.

December Happy Afternoon
1-5pm, Domku Restaurant

Note that you don’t need to be there all 4 hours, but its sure more fun
to work with others than alone.”

Incidentally, a number of readers have sent word on a Groupon deal today for Domku. You can find the deal here.

Well it’s not a house anymore. It is now Tots Development School located on the 1300 block of Shepherd Street, NW. We looked it at once way back in the day but I wanted to show a proper photo of the building (at the time I only had a crappy cell phone pic). This is the spot where Fenty once sent his children. But back to the building itself, it really is beautiful. It is also striking because it is in a block of regular residential row houses.

“Looking Glass Lounge will be hosting what is believed to be the only open mic comedy night in all of greater Petworth. This coming Monday night will be the inaugural night of jokes, but hopefully this will become a regular and, ideally, funny neighborhood institution.

Date: Monday, December 14, 2009
Time: 7:00pm – 10:00pm
Location: Looking Glass Lounge, 3634 Georgia Ave, NW

Local comics Reggie Melbrough and Mike Curran host a comedy evening at The Looking Glass Lounge. Sign up is from 7pm to 7:45pm. Opening performances by the hosts last until 8pm at which time the rest of the show will kick off, ending at 10pm. Comics will have ten minute sets and yes, there are open mic opportunities for some of you looking for embarrassment! At the end of the show, three people will be selected from the crowd to try their hand at stand-up, one joke a piece. The best joke gets a $25 gift certificate to be used at The Looking Glass Lounge or The Wonderland Ballroom.”

“Gorgeous Victorian Mansion. Amazing renovation with huge open living space, 7 bedrooms. Sep Dining Rm. Beautiful hardwood floors, high ceilings, audio sys speakers. Wrap-around porch. Encl brick patio. Two-story garage. With contract and negotiated terms developer will customize property including finished basement, create master suite and/or paved driveway.”

You can find more info and photos here and a mouse on house tour here.

Wow, this house is huge. What do you think of the renovation? I know folks have questioned in the past exactly how much a home in Petworth can go for and I suspect this price may bring similar comments. But I am curious to hear what you think about the home itself. This 7 bed/4 bath is going for $899,000.

When I previewed Corehaus a few weeks ago I promised to let folks know when they’d be open to the public. I just got word they’ll have a grand opening this Sat. from 4 – 8pm. Light food and refreshments will be served. This is the spot that owner, James Kerns, described as “taking old stuff and making it cool again”. Definitely worth checking out! 825 Upshur Street, NW is just a few storefronts down from Domku.

Fusion located at 4815 Georgia Ave, NW near Moroni and Bros. has long been one of my “new” favorite restaurants. I can hardly believe it has already been a year since they’ve opened. The owner, Barry, pictured above could be one of the nicest proprietors I’ve met (and I’ve been fortunate to meet many). Barry previously worked at Rasika and Bombay Club and has brought that quality of dining to Petworth. But more than just the great food, he has created a warm neighborhood spot where regular diners often greet each other like old friends. This was evidenced at the party thrown to celebrate the anniversary. It was filled with an amazingly friendly and diverse crowd. So congrats to Barry, his family and colleagues, and I look forward to many more years of quality dining at Fusion.

“Dear PoP,

I picked up the attached notice of suspension from the Park View blog. Apparently, the shooting that occurred on Rock Creek Church Road on Saturday, December 5, 2009 was part of a scuffle that began in Sweet Mango Café. Sweet Mango has been a staple in the Petworth Community and a favored spot for jerk chicken in DC. Many of us have found it to be one of the few edible spots on Georgia Avenue. Still, as a result of the crime and other offenses that have occurred this year, Chief of Police Cathy Lanier has deemed the establishment an “imminent danger to the health and welfare of the community.” Based on her recommendation, DCRA has suspended the establishment’s liquor license pending a hearing to occur tomorrow.”

Wow this is crazy. Thanks to all who sent emails about this. You can read the full complaint below:

sweet-mango-cafe-notice-of-summary-suspension

You really have to read the report, it is truly unbelievable. Basically, two patrons were kicked out, the shooting occurred and MPD found blood inside the vestibule of Sweet Mango while nobody from the establishment called the police. Additionally, they are accused of operating an illegal nightclub in the basement. Sweet Mango is located on New Hampshire Ave. across from the Petworth Metro.
